The Morgan Wallen Story
Morgan Wallen was born in Tennessee. His father was a preacher and Wallen took up violin and piano early in his life. Despite being from Tennessee, Wallen wasn’t necessarily into country music. Instead, it was Christian music and classic rock that captivated him. Breaking Benjamin and Three Doors Down were what Wallen was listening to while dreaming of making it big as a ballplayer.
“any kind of ball”
Wallen calls himself an avid lover of “any kind of ball.” However, it was baseball which he excelled in. He played for his high school team (the same school where Kenny Chesney had graduated from). Wallen was so good that he even secured a place for himself in a college baseball team. But then he was destined to become a country star and for that to happen a pitching accident took place, forcing Wallen to look somewhere else to make a living.
And Then Country Music Happened
In hindsight, there was no escaping country for Wallen. A native of Tennessee, who had discovered the music of Eric Church and whose baseball dreams had been dashed, Wallen was destined for Nashville. Once he heard Eric Church’s “Love Your Love The Most” Wallen was hooked.
A Shaky Start to a Promising Career
In 2014, he was one of the contestants on season 6 of The Voice, an NBC singing competition program. He was in Adam Levine’s team and went as far as the playoffs round. Wallen wouldn’t go further and was eliminated. Giving an interview to Billboard, Wallen said it was his mother who had signed him up. According to him, he had never seen the show before appearing on it where he was asked to sing pop music. Florida Georgia Line’s “Stay” was the only available country song option, so Wallen selected it but didn’t sing it to his true potential and was eliminated.
Blessing in Disguise
Wallen may have been booted out but not before the world had seen who he was. In 2015, he moved to Nashville where he got to record with none other than Joey Moi, thanks to Wallen’s record deal with Big Loud Records. It was at this time that he went on his debut radio tour as well.
2016, 2017 & FGL
In 2016, Wallen’s debut single “The Way I Talk” came out and so did it an EP of the same name. This set the tone for things to come for Morgan Wallen in 2017.
In 2017, Wallen was asked by none other than Florida Georgia Line (FGL) to tour with him. He accepted and joined the duo on their Dig Your Roots Tour on select dates. Brian Kelley and Tyler Hubbard returned the favor by collaborating with Wallen on his single, “Up Down.” This single will be Wallen’s introduction to the world as his debut studio album If I Know Me came out in 2018.
If I Know Me
Wallen debut effort got off to a flying start as it peaked at No.11 on the Billboard charts. The album also charted in Canada, thanks to super popular “Up Down.” A certified Platinum number “Up Down” debuted at No.1 spot on the Billboard Country Airplay.
When Bryan Called
Luke Bryan requesting Wallen to be one of the opening acts on his What Makes You Country XL Tour was a huge surprise for the latter. The two had met before only a couple of times and Wallen wasn’t expecting the honor. In addition to playing with someone like Luke Bryan, What Makes You Country XL Tour gives Wallen the opportunity to go back to his original love, baseball. Wallen will be opening for Bryan at the Wrigley Field, the Fenway Park and the Dodger Stadium.
