Born on the 12th of February, 1952 in St. Louis Missouri, Michael McDonald is an American singer and songwriter who gained famed as a back-up vocalist with the band called, Steely Dan. His singing style can be defined as classical singing, in which the vocals lie between bass and tenor vocals. This style of singing is known as, Baritone.

He began his journey as a musician in the McCluer High School in his hometown of Ferguson, Missouri. As a student there, he performed with several bands. Later on he moved to Los Angeles, California to make a career for himself in the music industry, after his singing talents were noticed during one of his performances with a band called, Blue. In Los Angeles, Michael McDonald starting working as a studio musician. It was here, where Michael met with a band called, Steely Dan in 1975. He became part of the group as an adjunct member. His involvement in group grew, as he worked as a background singer and keyboardist in many of their albums such as Aja, The Royal Scam, Gaucho and Katy Lied.
He was also on tour with Steely Dan throughout the ‘70s. Apart from his contributions to Steely Dan, Michael McDonald’s biggest breakthrough came, when he was offered to perform in place of Tim Johnston and his band called the Doobie Brothers. Since Tim Johnston was ill and could not perform properly, Michael McDonald was brought in as a temporary replacement singer. During his stay with the Doobie Brothers, Michael’s performance was fantastic enough to impress the other members of the band. So impressed were they, that the band offered Michael a permanent place in the band.

Michael stayed with the Doobie Brothers and went on to record such hits as It Keeps You Runnin, Talkin’ It To The Streets and the Grammy Award winning song of the year, What a Fool Believes. During this time of his career, he even collaborated with famous contemporary artists, either as a session singer or a piano player. He worked with artist like Stephen Bishop, Jack Jones, Christopher Cross, Bonnie Raitt and Kenny Loggins; with whom he wrote the award winning song What a Fool Believes. Michael McDonald started his music career at a very young age and started playing with several local bands in his hometown of Missouri. Once, when he was playing with a music group called Blue, he was discovered by a record label, which offered him a contract. Subsequently, he moved to Los Angles in 1970. He was also part of the immensely popular tour taken by the Steely Dan in the seventies, as the keyboard player as well as vocalist.

In 1975, The Doobie Brothers recruited Michael McDonald, when their lead singer Tom Johnston fell ill during a national tour. McDonald’s association with the band proved to be so successful that the band decided to keep him as a permanent member. During his years with the band, McDonald recorded some of the most popular songs by the band, including ‘Takin’ it to the Streets’, ‘Real Love’, ‘Minute by Minute’ and ‘Little Darling’. One of the tracks, ‘What a Fool Believes’ went on to become the number one single in the U.S., and also earned the band a Grammy Award in 1980. This is not all for the talented musician; he has also appeared as the piano player and session singer with renowned artists like Stephen Bishop, Bonnie Raitt, Christopher Cross Kenny Loggins and Jack Jones. McDonald has also proven himself time to time in songwriting.
