MICHAEL FRANTI SAN DIEGO “Sometimes, I feel like I can do anything, and, sometimes, I'm so alive, sometimes, I feel like I could zoom across the sky and, sometimes, I wanna cry.” With an optimistic tone and a progressive approach towards life, Michael Franti utters such charismatic words that spellbind those who hear them. An American poet, singer and composer, Franti is a combo of hip hop, rock, folk, jazz and many other styles.

Born in Oakland, California, Michael was adopted by a Finnish-American couple, Carole Wisti and Charles Franti, who owned three biological children and one African-American adopted child besides Michael. Charles Franti was a well read person and had a vision for his children to prosper as a professor at the UC Davis School of Veterinary Medicine. Michael graduated from University of San Francisco and thus stepped into the practical life to face the challenges stored for him. His passion for humanity and the urge to be productive for the society drove him not only towards music but also charity causes for which he is still respected. The motivational spirit to empower the world and excite the lamp of peace everywhere became his symbol.

During his student life in University of San Francisco, Michael developed some association with music. Later on the industrial punk band The Beatnigs proved to be a platform for Michael to make his debut in the music scene in 1986. Although the band released some records but they received very limited acclaim. The best was yet to come, so Michael had to keep his spirits high as he was heading his music career in a direction all studded with stardom and praise. The Beatnigs dancer and percussionist Rono Tse collaborated with Franti for his next project, The Disposable Heroes of Hiphoprisy, which had politically charged lyrics and focused on the injustices of the world. It was set with a fusion of industrial music and hip hop that marked the typical flavor of Franti. Franti and the Disposable Heroes in collaboration with the novelist William Burroughs' readings put together another record of music album entitled Spare Ass Annie and Other Tales.

The album has been charged to have diverged greatly from the style of the band's previous work primarily because they were largely providing musical background to Burroughs' spoken readings. In 1994, with the dissolution of The Disposable Heroes of Hiphoprisy, Franti formed a new band called Spearhead having a few studio musicians on its panel. Filled to brim with the funk and soul music, Home their first release in 1994 September was a change from the politically charged rap. With the follow up album Chocolate Supa Highway in 1997, the band split with Capitol Records and instead thought of making their own record label, Boo Boo Wax. Later on Franti started thinking on a different level and thus began a deeper exploration of his music and politics in the year 1999. The following year he returned as an organizer and cultural worker hooked to several intensifying political movements of the time which were resonant of his observations voiced through his music.

The year 2000 marked another thought-provoking hit Stay Human under the flagship of Michael Franti & Spearhead about which Franti says, 'Half the record is songs about what's happening in the world right now, and the other half is about how we cope with it as people who are concerned about what's going on' With the projects like Everyone Deserves Music in 2003 and Yell Fire! In 2006, took a highly unconventional route with hip hop roots. Michael Franti & Spearhead gained passionate audience applause besides suffering a huge setback to publicity from the electronic media. It was the direct public interaction and extensive touring that brought popularity to the band. 2008 marked the release of another album All Rebel Rockers that featured multi-talented vocalist Cherine Anderson ranking it at number 38 in Billboard 200 pop charts. Michael Franti also played at three different events to commemorate President Barack Obama. 'The Sound of Sunshine' is the latest work planned to release by mid 2010 for which the public is getting hyper to witness yet another masterpiece.
