About the Chargers
Based in the Greater Los Angeles Area, the LA Chargers came into being as a charter member of the old American Football League (AFL) in 1959 and began play the following year. However, at the conclusion of their debut season, they relocated to San Diego and became known as the San Diego Chargers.
Immediate success followed the young franchise as it won the AFL title in 1963. In fact, this decade just before the AFL-NFL merger is one of the most successful periods in the Chargers’ history. They played in four of the first five AFL championship games and won their division title five times. This included wins in 1960 and 1961 before winning three on the trot between 1963 and 1965.
The Balboa Stadium was their first home arena in San Diego after playing a solitary season in Los Angeles at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum. In 1967, they shifted to the SDCCU Stadium which served as their home arena until 2016, at which point the franchise shifted back to LA.
After the AFL merged with the NFL in 1970, the Chargers became a part of the West Division of the American Football Conference. Many great players have been a part of the Chargers’ roster over the years. These include Pro Football Hall of Famers Lance Alworth, Dan Fouts, Junior Seau, LaDainian Tomlinson, Fred Dean and Larry Little among others. You can catch the current crop of Chargers players in action by getting Los Angeles Chargers tickets.
The decade right after joining the NFL was a struggle for the Chargers as they failed to make the postseason for almost the whole of the 1970s. This changed in 1979 when they won their first division title in the NFL and followed it up with two more triumphs in 1980 and 1981 to make it three on the trot.
After this run of success, the rest of the 80s were another relatively barren period before the division title win in 1992 ushered in another successful period. Despite failing to make the playoffs in 1993, the Chargers bounced back in sensational fashion in 1994 and won the division title again before annexing the AFC Championship to book their first trip to the Super Bowl. More glory followed during the 2000s. This period brought 5 division titles for the Chargers including 4 straight wins from 2006 to 2009.
Since moving back to Los Angeles in 2017, the Chargers have played their home games at the Dignity Health Sports Park. They are scheduled to move to the newly-constructed Los Angeles Stadium at Hollywood Park when it opens. It will serve as a new state-of-the-art home arena for both the LA Chargers and the LA Rams. Get Los Angeles Chargers tickets now to enjoy some great football action.
Undoubtedly one of the greatest moments in Chargers’ history was their championship win in 1963 in the old AFL. That Chargers roster was arguably the best ever with the team featuring in four of the first five AFL Championship games. In 1963, they were at their absolute best with the top-ranked offense as well as defense in the league.
After cruising though the regular season, the Chargers came up against the formidable Boston Patriots but hardly anyone could have expected the one-sided encounter that followed. The Chargers ran out 51-10 winners to deliver one of the most epic performances in football history.
The Chargers will be hoping for similar heroics from their current roster as they look to make their mark in the city they originally left to head to San Diego all those years ago.
