King Kong – The Musical: Everything You Need to Know
King Kong officially stormed its way into the New York’s Broadway Theatre and is looking forward to a successful, extended run. The soaring sales of King Kong tickets 2018 indicate that the both the cinematic fans as well as theatergoers will be attending and have a blast.
Production – Australia’s Global Creatures will be celebrating its biggest year yet, with the pre-production of Moulin Rouge and King Kong that has already made its way to the New York theatre. The technology based company launched the first iteration in 2013 and the limited Australian run earned huge acclaim. It’ll be for the first time that live audiences will come face to face with the “beast”, which is by far the biggest puppet ever in Broadway history.
The new King Kong is handled through numerous motors and microprocessors, along with ten on-stage puppeteers. Global Creature Technology has earned itself a huge name by creating massive animatronic characters for stage shows. But their latest effort with King Kong is like no other.
About the King – It stands 20 feet tall and weighs 2000 pounds. Technically speaking, the beast has 1500 electric connections and 985 feet cable has been used for wiring. The monster puppet’s architecture is as brilliant as it’s intricate. Among the many materials used is steel on which the basic ‘skeleton’, so to say, is built. Through fiberglass the King Kong takes its form and carbon fiber is used for skull. To make it more realistic, inflatable tubes are used for limbs allowing flexible and fluid movement.
In case of any wear and tear, which is quite common in productions of this scale, there’s an onsite team that handles all the repairs. A talented team operates the movements of the King as a high-tech voodoo booth has been set up. There are separate puppeteers who control the head and neck movements, and others who control the facial expressions of the King.
The Cast & Creative Team – King Kong’s set design team includes Peter England and Sonny Tilders as the creature designers. The costumes are designed by Roger Kirk; whereas lighting and sound is by Peter Mumford and Peter Hylenski, respectively.
Drew McOnie, the choreographer and director has developed King Kong’s character as that of any other cast member. The versatility that the design team offered him allowed him to create King as an emotional ape, who not just became furious or pounded his feet, but also showed various emotions.
The story by Jack Thorne has given voice to King Kong. He has updated the plot for stage and revamped the character of Ann Darrow, to somebody who is more culturally sensible. Christiani Pitts beautifully plays the role of a fearless female who befriends the giant ape.
Eric William Morris is also brilliant as the filmmaker Carl Denham. He fully supports Pitts in her adventurous journey around an unchartered island. The early shows of King Kong – The Musical have taken the audiences by storm, especially those who are into technology and superb affects. Don’t miss out on King Kong tickets as the verdict is – it’s a much watch theatre show.
