Juan Gabriel is the stage name of Mexico’s one of the most prominent vocalist, Alberto Aguilera Valadez. Hailing from Paracuaro, Gabriel is the youngest among his ten siblings. He had a really tough childhood and this is quite evident from his songs like "De Sol a Sol (A Mis Padres)" which is dedicated to his parents. He started signing while he was in a boarding school and composed his first song at the age of thirteen. The song was titled “La Muerte del Palomo” and was indeed a really good start of his musical career. As long as he stayed in the school, he kept honing his composing skills. Sometime later, he ran away from the boarding as he couldn’t bear the separation from his mother. He was fifteen years old then.
Gabriel continued composing songs on his own and by the time he had composed some hundred songs he left his town and spent few months in Baja California. After returning to Ciudad Juarez, Gabriel adopted Adan Luna as his stage name and started performing at night clubs and on television, too. Gabriel, who had always dreamt of making an impression in the world of music, finally got the chance to perform at El Noa Noa, the popular nightclub. His first ever performance was with Prisioneros del Ritmo. Later, he performed there at a number of occasions, mostly singing popular songs of other artists and sometimes his original compositions. It didn’t take him long to become a favorite of many in Juarez and soon he was a local sensation.
By the age of nineteen, he moved to the Mexico City to give his musical career the boost it needed but was met with misfortune and was jailed for eighteen years on the basis of a false accusation. But things turned favorable for him even in jail where he met "La Prieta Linda," who not only helped him get out of jail but also put him in touch with RCA producers. He stayed in Mexico City and worked with various Latin artists including Roberto Jordan, Angelica Maria and Estela Nunez.
Shortly thereafter, Gabriel’s career had its first kick start and he was offered to sign a recording contract with RCA. At that time, he was twenty one and had officially changed his stage name to Juan Gabriel in remembrance of his schoolmaster and his father. Fifteen years passed and he became an internationally acclaimed Latin musician with fifteen recorded albums. His fame grew more and more with each passing day and soon Gabriel was a world-renowned artist and a leading Mexican singer-songwriter. He has recorded around thousand songs and has penned songs for a variety of genres ranging from ballad to disco. He made his acting debut in 1975 in Nobleza Ranchera and then appeared in a number of films including Es mi vida and Evicted.
Gabriel is winner of a number of awards and honors including the Billboard Latin Music Hall of Fame in which he was inducted in 1996. With an extensive discography of more than fifty albums that has sold more than hundred million records to this date, Gabriel is at the peak of his musical career.
