John Mayer has been nominated for 19 Grammys since his debut in 2003 with the first one being for Best New Artist. He has won 7, most recently for Best Male Vocal Rock Performance in 2009 for Gravity. NASA played the same song to wake up the crew of Space Shuttle Endeavour on August 11, 2007, a first for any artist. John Mayer was born in Bridgeport, Connecticut, to a high school principal and an English teacher. Inspired by Michael J. Fox in Back to the Future, Mayer took up guitar and started playing. According to Mayer, the song writer in him was born when he was hospitalized for cardiac dysrhythmia.

Mayer Inspirations

Michael J. Fox’s performance in Robert Zemeckis’s 1985 hit Back to the Future may have launched his career, unknowingly he also inspired a young Mayer to take up guitar lessons. After watching Marty McFly’s explosive performance, Mayer became fascinated and at age 13 his father rented him his first guitar. In addition to taking guitar lessons from a local guitar shop owner, Mayer started listening to Stevie Ray Vaughn. This gave birth to an interest in the Blues. Mayer expanded his listening to B.B.King, Freddie King, Albert King, Otis Rush, Lightnin Hopkins and Buddy Guy. After listening to the greats and a lot of practice, Mayer started performing at different venues and bars. He was still in high school when he began performing. He wrote his first lyrics the night he was discharged from the hospital. Dealing with a contentious home life due to his parents, Mayer retreated into a cocoon that allowed him to flourish as an artist. It’s not the first time an artist has used a difficult circumstance in their favor creatively. Many would say all true artists have gone through a difficult circumstance to find their inner creative spirit.
