Joanna Newsom – Indie Music’s Leading Light
Having an extensive musical background, Joanna Newsom started learning piano at the age of four and with her very first lesson had the aspiration to do something with music. At 9 she devotedly started playing the harp and at 12 went to folk music summer camp at Lark. The training program there transformed her musical experience and Newsom’s talent was recognized by her music teachers. A gifted musician, she found interest in classical harp and Celtic and began composing instrumental pieces. Her creativity, lyrical sense and imagination was extraordinary even at that young age and many people on that summer camp knew that one day Joanna Newsom would make a name for herself in the music world.
A bit unsettled by the technicalities of composing, she switched to creative writing and that sparked her imagination inspiring her to sing her own pieces. Her peculiar and untrained voice perfectly complimented her tunes and Joanna later recorded a collection of songs, sharing them with friends. Her songs were enjoyed by likeminded musicians such as Cat Power and Will Oldham, and they invited her to join them on their separate tours. After releasing a couple of EPs, she signed with Drag City and treated the fans to her debut album “The Milk-Eyed Mender”.
Joanna Newsom Treats the Listeners to an Ingenious Textural Sound
Known for creating avant-garde music, Joanna Newsom bends the rules a bit and expands upon the traditional sounds. In doing so her music doesn’t lose authenticity and her compositions are familiar yet unique, useful and nearly sacred. Following a stellar debut, Newsom released “Ys” in 2006 and it became one of the most critically acclaimed releases that year. The five-track album highlighted her music sensibilities and gave her much confidence to embark on her solo tour. Joanna Newsom tickets sold like hot cakes and every concert witnessed a jam-packed attendance.
After four years Newsom released “Have One on Me” and it topped Billboard Top Folk charts. Featuring an array of songs, it was named among the best albums of 2010 and renowned publications and critics hailed Joanna for her talent, vocals and vision.
“Divers” – A Superb Palette of Ideas, Vocals & Musicianship
After releasing three critically acclaimed records, Newsom had been quiet for almost five years and earlier in 2015 announced her new album. Fans got a taste of the single “Sapokanikan” in August and it raised their anticipation for the entire album. Once again hitting jackpot, “Divers” takes the listeners to a unique sonic world and is an aesthetic blend of instrumental textures. With the fluidity of a bird, she flits from the 18th century chamber music to the 19th century’s folk and her lyrics have a touch of 70s pop, along with the traces of sounds from other eras. Her exploration as a musician has only grown richer with time and the result is profound, dazzling and affecting.
Joanna Newsom will soon be bringing her ingenious music to the live audience as she has announced “Divers” support tour. Through her melodic sensibilities she takes the crowd on a music journey they’re unlikely to forget. All her concerts end with a standing ovation as the fans shout for more. Don’t miss the enchanting performer when she comes to your city.
