About The Band And Its Best Albums
Originally known as Mofro Magic, the history of the band can be traced back to the mid-nineties. Initially consisting of Jj Grey and Daryl Hance, the band currently has seven members. Hance and Grey became friends in their hometown Florida and music played a very important part in their bonding. Named by JJ Grey, the band was called Mofro because of the sound they produced. Grey once mentioned that one of his friend’s gave him this nickname and he adopted it as the name of his band. Later, he changed the name of the band to JJ Grey & Mofro because his grandmother once asked him if he is ashamed to use it. Every band is famous for either a song or a specific album, so here are the some of the most famous records of JJ Grey & Mofro.
Consisting of organic and earthy tunes, Blackwater is the band’s debut album which was released in 2001. Inspired by JJ’s hometown, the album consists of 13 songs and has won multiple awards. In this record, JJ Grey describes the early days of his hometown when there were no skyscrapers or highways. The area was not polluted with technology like cars, cell phones or electric light and people used to live a simpler life. The singer in this album is reminiscing the good old days and simpler lifestyle. Even though the sounds of this album are traditional yet they sound very refreshing.
After the massive success of their first album, the band decided to release another one and titled it Lochloosa. Located on the outlying district of Jacksonville, the song refers to lake Lochloosa. This album is a perfect example of how music is created after midnight when things get intimate, blurry and less self-conscious. It talks about how industrialization has destroyed the natural beauty of the city and areas around it. The album’s title song describes the altering landscapes of the beautiful Northern Florida.
Rooted in tradition and vintage blues, rock and soul, Georgia Warhorse is the fifth record of the band. Consisting of 11 new songs, the music of the album seems to be slipping in Southern R&B, blues, soul and rock. Named after a cricket found in the lands of Florida, the album depicts strength and hope. Some of its famous songs include Slow, Hot & Sweaty, The Hottest Spot in Hell, The Sweetest Thing and many more.
The River was released after one of the permanent members, Daryl Hance departed from the group. This album proved to be a bridge between the band and the stage. Half of the tracks of the album are funky and up-tempo while the rest are a little tame. Your Lady, She’s Shady, Somebody Else and Tame a Wild One are some of its most popular songs.
Known as the group's recent release, "Ol' Glory" consists of a unique blend of funk, folk, blues, gospel and rock. Released in 2015, the album has a unique touch of Southern inspired narratives. Each song of the album has its own unique style; some songs are up-beat while others follow a down tempo. Grey presents a unique image of his band through this album. It consists of layers of acoustic guitars accompanied with steel guitars and backing instrumentation.
The upcoming performances of JJ Grey &Mofro will be like a fusion of all of these. Grab your JJ Grey & Mofro Tickets and attend the band’s 2020 Tour.
