Moving to Nashville
In the late 1960s, Buffet moved to Nashville, Tennessee to embark on a musical career. In 1970, he signed to the Barnaby label and recorded his first album, Down to Earth. The singer later moved to Key West, Florida, where he developed a tropical folk-rock style of music, and became famous for his beach-bum persona.
Entering the Top Ten and Subsequent Success
He later signed to ABC-Dunhill Records, and released his sophomore album, White Sport Coat and a Pink Crustacean, in 1973. Albums A1A, and Living & Dying in 3/4 Time both followed the next year. The song ‘Come Monday’ from his third album, Living & Dying in 3/4 Time, was his first singles chart entry. His 1977 album, Changes in Attitudes, featured the hit track ‘Margaritaville’ which entered the Top Ten. In the following years, he released a number of albums, and also branched into merchandising and writing. He opened a ‘Margaritaville’ retail store in Key West in 1985 and also opened the ‘Margaritaville Café’ in 1987.
