This great duo was formed in 1985 by two college girls Emy Saliers and Amy Ray, they met in high school while they were in Decatur Atlanta in Georgia. Their initial performances were on weekly basis at a village bar called The Dugout while they studied at the Emory University. Their first album was self titled EP released in 1987 and then they were signed by recording giants Epic Records mainly due to the fact that other folk rock artists like Suzanne Vega and Tracy Chapman were gaining popularity. Their first album under Epic Records was also self-titled and this album went straight to #22 on Charts, this album went Platinum and opened the doors of popularity for the duo. Their single "Closer to Fine" from the same album was at #52 on US Billboard Hot 100.

Indigo Girls got their first major prestigious award in 1990 when they won a Grammy Award for Best Contemporary Folk Album and got another nomination in the category for Best New Artist. Their second album Nomads Indians Saints also met with success and went on #43 on US Charts with one of its singles "Hammer and Nail" going straight to #12 slot on US Modern Rock Tracks Charts. Their fifth album Rites of Passage went to #21 on charts but in 1994 it was Swamp Ophelia that simply rocked the audience as it was the first album of Indigo Girls that went to #9 on US Charts and their first album ever to chart in UK at #66.

The year of 1997 saw yet another superb album from Indigo Girls called Shaming of the Sun, this album till date is the duo’s highest charting album as it landed on #7 on US Billboard.  Indigo Girls latest charting album till date is Poseidon and the Bitter Bug which was released in 2009 and was at #29 on US Charts. Indigo Girls also released a single in collaboration with the famous singer Pink called "Dear Mr President", this single was an instant hit and charted at #3 and #5 on German and Australian Charts respectively and also went to #100 on US Dance Hot Adult Top 40 and #101 on US Billboard Hot 100.  Apart from studio albums this duo has got four live and five compilation albums to their name and the latest live album is Staring Down the Brilliant Dream which was released in 2010, their latest compilation album was also released in 2010 and the name of it was Metro: The Official Bootleg Series, Volume 1.
