A subgenre of R&B, doo wop was popularized by the African American communities in cities like Philadelphia, Chicago and Detroit. Doo wop is built entirely on vocal harmony and features nonsense syllables, little to no instrumentation and a simple beat, lyrics and music. The genre swept the nation during the ‘60s but lost prominence since then.
As part of this Doo Wop extravaganza, Shirley Alston Reeves will be performing her hit singles “Will You Still Love Me Tomorrow,” “Soldier Boy” and “Mama Said” among others. Shirley is renowned for being the lead singer of the former singing group, The Shirelles. Her distinct strong voice made her popular during the ‘60s when she sang some of the best hits of the decade. The all-female group charted hits for a quarter of a century after beginning their career in ’57. They have been awarded with numerous accolades and were inducted to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
Another prominent artist at the show will be Gene Chandler. The Grammy Hall of Fame inductee enjoyed a successful career that was started in the ‘60s and lasted till the late ‘80s. He actively participates and sings at notable occasions and doo wop festivals. He is recognized nationwide for his chart-topper “Duke of Earl” and the popular singles “Groovy Situation” and “Nothing Can Stop Me Now.” “The “Duke of Earl” received so much appreciation that he nicknamed himself with the title. During his career, he released around forty R&B and Pop chart successes.
The Teenagers have helped build a wider audience for doo wop. Through their career, they have released best-selling singles such as “Why Do Fools Fall In Love,” “The ABC’s Of Love” and “Goody Goody”. The multiracial group is credited as being the first all-teenaged musical act in rock. Fronted initially by the young Frankie Lymon, The Legendary Teenagers enjoyed many hits during the ‘50s.
The Tokens, the all-male doo wop sensation, is world renowned for making “The Lion Sleeps Tonight” a US phenomenon. Originally known as “Mbube” and “Wimoweh,” the song’s rendition by The Tokens made it a chart topper at the Billboard Hot 100. The brilliant song was adapted into the soundtrack of one of the highest-grossing animated movies of all time; The Lion King. Jay Siegel’s The Tokens will participate in the Doo Wop Extravaganza performing the hit single among others like “Portrait of My Love.”
The American pop girl group, The Toys, fronted by Barbara Harris, will also be appearing in the Extravaganza. Their popularity spread across the states in the seven years they were active. Since then, Barbara Harris has participated in doo wop festivals for the promotion of the hit ‘60s singing style.
