The start of High On Fire
High On Fire was founded by the guitarist of Sleep, Matt Pike along with the drummer Des Kensel and bassist George Rice who originally auditioned to be the group's lead vocalist. The band got their journey started by signing a record deal with Man's Ruin Records who issued their first studio album, 'The Art of Self Defense' on March 7, 2000. The record though did not chart anywhere in the world but it still generated positive response from the critics, receiving 4/5 stars from AllMusic and Kerrang! The band then left the label shortly after the release of their debut record and got signed by Relapse Records who issued their second studio project, 'Surrounded by Thieves' on May 28, 2002. This record too failed to chart but got raving reviews from the critics.
Gaining some traction
In 2005, High On Fire started to gain some traction in the United States when they came out with their third studio album, 'Blessed Black Wings.' This marked their first effort to enter the Top Heatseekers chart at the 40th spot and was placed at the 48th spot in the list of the, '50 Greatest Albums of the 21st Century' by Kerrang! It also made the Rolling Stone's list of, 'The 100 Greatest Metal Albums of All Time.' A couple of years later, the guys dropped their next studio project, 'Death Is This Communion' which helped a lot in their rise to fame. The record created huge waves across the states, reaching at the 22nd spot on the Hard Rock Albums chart and was met with great response from the critics.
Three years later, the band shared their fifth studio record with the world entitled, 'Snakes for the Divine.' This album instantly became a favorite of the sludge metal fans as it featured thirteen powerful tracks including, Fire, Flood & Plague which featured on the soundtrack of the Bandai Namco game called, 'Splatterhouse.' After the release of this record, the guys locked themselves in the studio again and started to work on their next record. On April 3, 2012, 'De Vermis Mysteriis' was released to the masses which featured eleven songs on the track-list. Produced by Kurt Ballou, the record climbed to the 63rd spot on the Billboard 200 and was supported by a single, Fertile Green.
Their rise to fame continues
High On Fire's journey towards fame continued as they dropped two studio albums more, 'Luminiferous' and 'Electric Messiah' in 2015 and 2018 respectively. The former turned out to be a big critical hit and was ranked at the eighteenth spot on the Pitchfork's list of, 'The Best Metal Albums of 2015.' It also gave two single, Slave the Hive and The Black Plot. Whereas the latter was also approved by the critics, making it to the Loudwire's list of, 'The 30 Metal Albums of 2018.'
