Green Day came into being in 1986 courtesy of bass player Mike Dirnt and vocalist/guitarist Billie Joe Armstrong. The band was quite active on the punk rock scene that the DIY 924 Gilman Street Club in Berkeley was known for. In fact, they are credited as being one of the groups that popularized punk rock music in the US.

In 1990, the band from California released their debut album 39/Smooth. The following year, they came out with Kerplunk which was certified Platinum by the RIAA. It also earned Gold certification in the UK and Canada.

Building on the success of Kerplunk, Green Day released Dookie in 1994 which remains one of their most successful offerings to date. It took 2nd place on the US Billboard 200 while the RIAA gave it a Diamond certification. Furthermore, music charts in New Zealand, Australia and Canada had Dookie ranked at number 1.

Some of Green Day’s most popular numbers were a part of this album including “Longview,” “Welcome to Paradise” and “Basket Case.” In total, the multi-Grammy winners have released over a dozen albums till now.
