Sully Erna, after playing the drums for 23 years decided to start the band in 1995 as the lead singer. The original name of the band was Scam which was later changed to the present Godsmack. The band's initial performances were small bars in their home town Boston, Mass. They were noticed in the Boston and New England area by their locally popular songs Keep Away and Whatever.
In a 1999 interview Erna said that he made fun of someone with a cold sore and the next day he had one himself. When someone said he was being punished for mocking and so God smacked his face, the name of the band was changed to its present name.
Tony Rombola and Joe D'Arco joined the band in 1996 after Richards and Stewart left for personal issues. The same year, the band recorded their first studio CD titled All Wound Up recorded in three days for $2,600. The band played throughout the Boston area for the next two years before Rocko got his hands on their CD. Rocko was the night-time DJ for Boston Radion Station WAAF. Godsmack‘s song Keep Away was repeatedly played and immediately reached the number one spot. Shortly afterwards, the band recorded Whatever which became a local favorite on WAAF. Things finally started to take off for the members of Godsmack.
Their debut CD Godsmack came out in 1998 when the band was signed by Universal/Republic Records. It was a multi-platinum album. They returned to studio in 2000 to record another platinum album Awake. In 2003 the band came out with their third album Faceless which sold more than 269,000 copies in its first week. In 2004 their acoustic EP The Other Side came which also took an unusual high position on the Billboards. In 2006, they released their album IV which has been certified gold. The following year the band took out their greatest hits album titled Ten Years of Godsmack.
In summer 2010, Godsmack came out with their third full-length studio album The Oracle which sold 117,00 copies in the first week. In 2002 Erna wrote and performed a song for The Scorpion King which was the third movie in the Mummy saga. It became the most played Active Rock song of 2002 and became the number one song at Rock Studio. The song was also used in the game Prince of Persia. Godsmack has been nominated for four Grammy awards for their singles Vampire, I Stand Alone and Straight Out of Line. In 2001 they won A Billboard for Rock Artist of the Year.
Godsmack has fan forums under Godsmack Domain as well a Spanish Fan club Bad Magick. They also have a Facebook page and are present on Twitter and My Space besides a tour blog. The Voodoo Tour was the band's first headlining tour. High record sales and energetic live performances not only increased the number of their fans but got them time slots on Ozzfest in 1999 and 2000, a European tour with Black Sabbath as well as a performance at Woodstock. Since the band was made, it has toured on Ozzfest as well as other major tours and festivals. Besides, the band has toured extensively for the promotion of its albums. The band also toured Europe supporting Limp Bizkit. In 2004 they did an extensive tour of Europe and America supporting Metallica in Madly in Anger with the World Tour and sold record breaking Godsmack tickets.
Currently the band is supporting its latest album Oracle on a tour with Five Finger Death Punch and Drowning Pool. Sully retorts to accusations of being violent in an interview by saying that “there is something wrong with people who can't distinguish between music and violence. There are a lot of people who just can't deal with the energy they feel and they release it in a negative way.” Musicians, he believes, are wrongly blamed for violence.
Fans with Godsmack tickets would know how the band's live performances are – full of energy, lots of drama and a whole lot of anger. Godsmack currently has signed deals with Universal Music Group (UMG).
