Moreover, they are a blend of two musical families famous for their flamenco music. One of the families is the Reyes and the other is the Baliardos. Both the families are related to the great flamenco singer Manitas de Plata. Gipsy Kings consists of eight members, three of which are ‘Baliardos’: Diego Baliardo, guitarist, Paco Baliardo, guitarist, and Tonino Baliardo, the lead guitarist. The other five members belong to the ‘Reyes family’. They are sons of Jose Reyes, a flamenco singer. Nicholas Reyes is the lead vocalist and guitarist. Paul, Canut, Patchai and Andre Reyes are backup vocalists and guitarists. There was a ninth member of the band, Chico Bouchikhi, who left after the release of the fourth album. He had a Moroccan and Algerian bloodline.
All of them were born in France. Their parents were of Spanish Romani descent based in Catalonia who had come to France in the 1930s when the Spanish Civil War caused the natives to flee their country. Manitas and Jose used to perform together but then Jose split and formed a band with his teenage sons. However, as fate would have it, Jose died and his death led to the two family’s reunion who met each other at a pilgrimage. Little did they know that a night of reminiscing together and singing would prove to be so significant historically. The band was formed in the 1970s in Arles, a town situated in the south of France. They initially named themselves ‘Los Reyes’ which in Spanish means ‘the kings’. They used to travel around like gypsies and played at weddings and festivals and as a result, the band aptly renamed itself, the Gipsy Kings. Their first two albums, "Allegria" and "Luna de Fuego", released in early 1980s did not do very well commercially. They rose to fame when their third album, self-named, hit the market in 1987. Its songs "Djobi Djoba", "Bamboleo" and "Un Amor" proved to be smashing hits. Throughout the countries in Europe, Africa and the Middle East, people loved the Gipsy Kings. Their popularity rose to new heights when their "Gipsy Kings" the album was released in the USA. It is one of the few Spanish language albums that have stayed on the American music charts for forty straight weeks. What was so appealing was the type of music that combined conventional flamenco music, Rumba Flamenca with the pop genre. One example is their version of "Hotel California" which has fast rhythmic flamenco beats and strumming which is a must listen. The Gipsy Kings have released eighteen albums to date with their last album titled "Pasajero" released in the year 2006. The band has sold over 18 million albums throughout the world. Moreover, they have played songs for various movies among which are "The Mask of Zorro" and "Toy Story 3" which was released in 2010. They have performed live at numerous concerts around the world. Though they have not won any major award, to the dismay of their fans, they have been nominated for a number of them. They share the record of most nominations for the Grammy Award with singer Cesária Évora, the Cape Verdean singer.
The rapturous Romani touches, the Andalucian Spanish accent, the funky pop, the razz and dazz of Spanish Flamenco combined with salsa and rumba dazzled the audiences and popularized this traditional music all over the world. The Gipsy Kings have done what very few people ever achieve. They introduced the music of their ancestors to the world and by doing so, have preserved it in such a way that they have given it a new life. This achievement has won them millions of fans all over the world. The young and the old both cannot resist tapping their feet and swaying to the band’s music. Therefore, the demand for the Gipsy Kings Tickets has no chance of waning! Get yours now to have a rocking time at their live concert.
