Being born into a family of musicians in Montreal, what with his father Russ Vannelli playing in cabaret band, Gino was shown the stringed ropes from an early age. He soon learnt how to play the drums and along with his brothers Joe and Ross, who were not lacking in their fair share of musical ability, he formed an R&B band. However, it was only when Gino went solo that lady luck took a shine to him and he was signed on to RCA Records in 1970. Yet, it still took him another four years to really make a dent in the music scene of the seventies disco era, but when he did, he really got people moving and grooving.
Gino’s 1974 debut single "People Gotta Move" was an instant success and became his first top-25 hit not only in Canada but also in the US, ascending to the 22nd spot on Billboard’s Hot 100 chart. Even though the song’s respective album was initially titled Powerful People, it was renamed to People Gotta Move to cash in on the eponymous single’s explosive popularity. The record itself charted on the Billboard 200 and achieved a peak position of 60. Its follow-up Storm at Sunup replicated the debut record’s performance and arose to the 35th spot of the US R&B chart. Gino Vannelli released three more albums in the late 1970s and subsequently saw the barometer of his fame rise higher and higher. A case in point was the commercial success of the 1978 record Brother to Brother that peaked at the 13th and 12th spots on Billboard 200 and the R&B Albums charts respectively. The album also spawned Gino’s biggest hit to date in "I Just Wanna Stop" that hit the 4th spot on both the Adult Contemporary and Billboard’s Hot 100 charts.
Instead of the 1980s being the twilight of his career, such as experienced by many successful artists of the 1970s, the decade proved to be a pivotal phase in the career of the Canadian artist. His 1981 record The Best Of Gino Vannelli was not a critical success, only managing to make a dent in Billboard 200 by achieving a peak position of 172. 1981’s Nightwalker proved to be another top-20 hit record on Billboard 200, with its single "Living Inside Myself" proving to be a sleeper hit for Gino, rising to perch itself at the 6th spot on Billboard’s hot 100 and the 5th on the Adult Contemporary charts. For the rest of the 1980s, Gino continued to be in the limelight and though undergoing a setback with 1987’s Big Dreamers Never Sleep, regained his contemporary pop rock appeal with 1995’s Yonder Tree that climbed to the 16th spot on Top Contemporary Jazz Albums chart and then asserted his enduring eclecticism with 2003’s Canto that hit a highpoint at 10 on the Top Classical Crossover chart.
Gino Vannelli has released four more records since Canto and has also been performing all over the world. From his sold-out shows in Las Vegas to his concerts and recording sessions in Amsterdam, Gino has always kept his finger on the pulse of popular music yet has not compromised on his core musical values of blue-eyed soul, jazz and funk. So claim some Gino Vannelli tickets to be charmed by this veteran ladies man and his teasing tunes that will make you go weak in the knees throughout his performance.
