Beginning his career
Eric Johnson was born in a musical family in 1954. Inspired by legendary acts like Bob Dylan, Jimi Hendrix, Stevie Ray Vaughan and Jerry Reed, he learned to play the guitar at age eleven. He quickly honed his skills as a guitarist and soon found a spot in the band Mariani. They recorded a demo but members of the band went separate ways which led to Johnson joining another group, Electromagnets in 1974. The group spent three years touring but failed to land themselves a record deal as a result of which they disbanded in 1977.
Not giving up on his dreams, Johnson recruited drummer, Bill Maddox and bassist, Kyle Brock and formed the Eric Johnson Group. The trio went on to develop a cult following by playing shows around Austin before Johnson hit the studio to work on his first studio project. He wrote ten songs and then put them together in one special album titled ‘Seven Worlds’ which came out in 1978. It received four and a half stars out of five from AllMusic.
Eric Johnson then became a session guitarist for famous stars like Christopher Cross, Carole King and Cat Stevens before he signed with Warner Bros. Records in 1984. A couple of years later, his second studio record, ‘Tones’ saw the light of day. It contained nine electrifying songs including, Off My Mind which earned him a Grammy nomination under the category of the ‘Best Rock Instrumental Performance.’
Marking his territory
After his contract with Warner Bros. Records expired, Eric Johnson signed with Capitol Records via which he released his third studio album, ‘Ah Via Musicom.’ The album was supported by five singles out of which, Righteous and Trademark became Top 10 hits. The record was also approved by the critics. He then went on a tour in support of ‘Ah Via Musicom.’ After that, he began recording his next studio album, ‘Venus Isle.’ It arrived in stores in 1996 and featured a song, Camel’s Night Out which featured on video games, ‘Guitar Hero World Tour’ and ‘Guitar Hero 5.’
In 2002, Johnson’s fifth studio LP, ‘Souvenir’ hit the stores. It contained the cover song, Paperback Writer originally released by the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductees, The Beatles. After that, he released another Grammy winning record, ‘Bloom’ in 2005. It collected rave reviews from the likes of AllMusic and contained sixteen instrumental tracks.
Still rocking the world
Eric Johnson then released two more critically hit records, ‘Up Close’ and ‘Electric’ in 2010 and 2014 respectively. Many notable artists appeared on the former album including, Malford Milligan, Steve Miller, Jonny Lang and Sonny Landreth. ‘Electric’ was different from his other albums as it included influences of jazz. It also featured his take on the Jimi Hendrix classic track, Red House.
Johnson then thought about recording an acoustic album and the result was ‘EJ.’ It came out in 2016. When he was asked in an interview by Guitar World about why his chose this material for the record, he had this to say,
“It was a process of elimination. I just got a bunch of songs together and started recording them. Whatever songs I thought had merit or the ones I caught a vibe on, those were the ones I culled down for this record.”
He is on the road
Eric Johnson is now going to support ‘EJ’ on tour and will be performing plenty of gigs throughout North America. He is scheduled to play music in cities like, Anaheim, San Diego, Sacramento, Denver, Houston and Raleigh.
