Eli Young Band as the name implies is a combination of the names of two founding members who were musicians as well as university fellows namely singer and guitar player Mike Eli and lead guitar player and backing vocalist James Young. Both these gifted musicians met in Texas University and decided to join hands to form a band, eventually Eli Young Band was formed in the year 2000. Two other members in the band are bassist Jon Jones, drummer Chris Thompson whereas pedal steel and keys player Keith Davis occasionally accompanies the band on tours. Eli Young Band has been signed with famous recording labels like Carnival Records, Universal South Records and the very popular Republic Nashville.

Eli Young Band released a self-titled album in 2002 under the label of Carnival Records but this album failed to make any impact on the critics as well as the audience. Level was the second album again released by Carnival in the year 2005 and this was the start of a successful career for the group. The album didn’t sell well but the band was eventually noticed and as a result Eli Young Band had the privilege of performing as an opening act for extremely popular country singer Miranda Lambert. Following this the group embarked on a nationwide tour and opened for other popular names in the music industry such as Robert Earl, Jack Ingram and pat Green. The group also had a chance to perform live at the Austin Limits Music Festival.

Jet Black & Jealous was the band’s third studio album that went on sale in 2008, this album played an important role in getting the band noticed immediately in the music world and as a result it became the first album to enter US Billboard at #30 and #5 on US Country Charts. One of the singles from this album got the band a nomination at the Academy of Country Music in the category for Top New Vocal Group or Duo but the band failed to win the award. Eli Young Band released the fourth studio album Life at Best in August 2011 and this time the recording label was Republic Nashville. The album proved to be a bigger success than the previous one as it landed at better positions on both US Country and Billboard charts at #3 and #6 respectively.  For this album the band has again been nominated for Country Music Awards in categories like Single Record of the Year, Top Vocal Group of the Year and Song of the Year. One single by Eli Young Band called "Crazy Girl" was a super hit effort selling around a million copies and earning a platinum certification, the single also topped the US Country chart. Few other charting singles include "Radio Waves", "Even If It Breaks Your Heart", "When It Rains" and "Always the Love Songs".
