Coming into existence
The Midwest Combine and The Alliance came into existence in the early 1970s because of the strict rules enforced by the VFW and the American Legion. Midwest was formed by The Cavaliers, the Troopers, the Blue Stars, the Santa Clara Vanguard and the Madison Scouts whereas The Alliance saw the light of day thanks to the 27th Lancers, the Blue Rock, the Boston Crusaders, the Blessed Sacrament Golden Knights and the Garfield Cadets.
The American Legion and the VFW also paid very low performance fees to the corps for appearing in different competitions. This led them to believe that not only were they being financially starved but their ability to perform at their creative potential was also being hindered. Feeling that the corps should conduct their own competitions and make their own rules, the Alliance and the Combine joined forces in 1971.
The following year, ten corps from the Midwest Combine and the Alliance along with the Argonne Rebels, the Anaheim Kingsmen and the De La Salle Oaklands founded Drum Corps International. In 1972, the world saw the first DCI World Championship at the Warhawks Stadium on the campus of University of Wisconsin – Whitewater. Out of thirty nine corps that were taking part in the competition from fifteen states, the Anaheim Kingsmen won the DCI World Championship on August 18th.
Taking the world by storm
Since its inception in 1972, the Drum Corps International has been organizing competitions among junior drum and bugle corps in the United States and Canada. With its headquarters located in Indianapolis, Indiana, DCI has become a global phenomenon. It is attended by approximately four hundred thousand fans every summer. Plus, the annual Drum Corps International tour is composed of over one hundred events that take place throughout North America.
So far corps like, the Star of Indiana, the Blue Devils, the Cadets of Bergen County and the Garfield Cadets have all won the DCI title. Last year in 2016, the Bluecoats were crowned the Drum Corps International World Champion.
You can watch it live
Now, the spectacle is on tour and over fifty five corps will be competing against each other as part of it. You can expect great things from the show as the executive director of the Drum Crops International and CEO, Dan Acheson stated, “Each year, Drum Corps International’s ensembles reach new levels of performance excellence. As we celebrate our milestone 45th anniversary in 2017, we are looking forward to providing an unparalleled showcase for these standard-setting student musicians and performers.”
The Drum Corps International tour got off to a great start when it was staged at the Lucas Oil Stadium on June 22nd. Then, West Coast Corps excited fans by holding their first competitive performance of the season in Clovis, California which was followed by events at the Stanford Stadium and the Rose Bowl Stadium. DCI later made its way to Florida where it held two shows on July 8th at the Camping World Stadium in Orlando.
On July 20th, the fans in Texas will get to experience the DCI tour when it stops in Belton and Denton. A day later on July 21st, one of the Drums Corps International shows will be performed in Houston. It will then make its way to the Alamodome in San Antonio on July 22nd. You will then get to see it live at the Vanderbilt Stadium in Nashville on July 28th. The spectacle will later return to Indianapolis where the Drum Corps International will conduct the Prelims, Semifinals and Finals at the Lucas Oil Stadium on August 10th, 11th and 12th respectively.
