The Inception of Double Dare
During the mid 1980s, consulting and production groups approached Nickelodeon with the idea of creating a game show for children. The network conducted focus groups and found out that children do like watching game shows with adults but there aren't any shows for that demographic. This led to Nickelodeon hiring, Michael Klinghoffer, Dee LaDuke, Geoffrey Darby and Robert Mittenthal. They began to design the format of the show and based it on a combination of truth or dare, trivia and Mouse Trap.
Nickelodeon then began its search for potential candidates to host the program. The network initially thought of hiring Soupy Sales but they later considered him too old for the role. They later considered recruiting Dana Carvey but they found out that he was offered to audition for Saturday Night Live. The search for a host continued. Nickelodeon then started taking auditions for the job and finally found the show’s host in Marc Summers. Double Dare would later go on to become one of the most successful Marc Summers TV shows ever.
The producers of Double Dare later felt the need to add an announcer to the show and offered this responsibility to radio personality, John Harvey who readily accepted. Nickelodeon then hired Byron Taylor and James Fenhagen who designed the original stage for Double Dare and the production of the show began in Philadelphia at the WHYY-TV. On October 6, 1986, the first episode of Double Dare was aired on the network. After completion of sixty five successful episodes, the first season of the show concluded. Due to its immense popularity, the second season of the show was announced.
The Dawn of Super Sloppy Double Dare and Family Double Dare
The people behind Double Dare thought about working on a weekend edition of the show and so, ‘Super Sloppy Double Dare’ saw the light of day on August 2, 1987. The gameplay was similar to that of the original format except that the obstacles and physical challenges were designed to make a bigger mess. This concept of the show also became a major hit and the team went to work on its Saturday night edition. The result was, ‘Family Double Dare.’
It was broadcasted on Fox from April 3 to July 23, 1988 after the network purchased the show's distribution rights. This version of the show consisted of teams of four family members. Fox later cancelled the show due to creative differences.
On January 22, 1989, a new version of Super Sloppy Double Dare was introduced. It was held in larger studios and featured many interesting themes including, ‘Backwards Day,’ ‘Salute to Baseball,’ Salute to Breakfast,’ ‘Super-Slop-a-Mania’ and ‘Stupid Hat Day.’ After a decade, Nickelodeon revived Double Dare and named it, Double Dare 2000. This version followed the format of Family Double Dare and featured new and improved physical challenges. In November of 2000, the series ended.
The Revival of Double Dare
On November 23, 2016, the show celebrated its 30th anniversary by airing, Double Dare Reunion Special on Nick at Nite. This special included behind-the-scenes clips, vintage footage and a new game which was played on the 2016 edition of San Diego Comic-Con. This special was watched by more than one million viewers and Nickelodeon announced the latest version of Double Dare on April 25, 2018. The series debuted on June 25th and is hosted by four Teen Choice Award winner, Liza Koshy.
