Becoming a Star
David Lee Murphy grew up in Herrin, Illinois. He used to listen to country legends like, Willie Nelson and Waylon Nelson which made him fall in love with the genre. He also became a huge fan of southern rock bands like, Z.Z. Top, The Allman Brothers and Lynyrd Skynyrd. Murphy then decided to become a country singer and as a result of that he moved to Nashville. Initially he was rejected by record labels and because of that he started to write songs for others and also began to play the honky-tonks of Middle Tennessee with his group. At the same time, he helped co-write album cuts for Dough Stone and Reba McEntire.
Murphy recorded a song, Just Once which was heard by the president of MCA Nashville and Grammy winning producer, Tony Brown. Impressed by the track, he not only signed him to the label but also put that song on the soundtrack of the Hollywood film, ‘Rodeo’ which came out in 1994. This boosted his confidence and he soon hit the Sound Stage Studios to start working on his debut studio album with Brown.
On August 30, 1994, he released, ‘Out with a Bang’ and it made a solid impact. The album not only peaked at the tenth spot on the Top Country Albums chart but also went gold in the United States and Canada. It also contained five singles out of which, Dust on the Bottle turned out to be his first single to peak at the Country Airplay chart. In addition, it received 4/5 stars from AllMusic.
David Lee Murphy kept rolling in the right direction after the release of, ‘Out with a Bang’ and surprised fans with his second hit record, ‘Gettin’ Out the Good Stuff’ which hit the shelves in 1996. It too made headlines across North America, charting on both the Top Country Albums and the Canadian RPM Country Albums. The album had catchy songs like, Every Time I Get Around You and The Road You Leave Behind. Both tracks became fan favorites and performed well on the music charts especially the former which debuted at the second spot on the Canada Country Tracks and the Hot Country Songs.
A year later, Murphy dropped his third studio effort, ‘We Can’t All Be Angels.’ This was his last album for RCA Nashville. The record delivered many memorable hits including, All Lit Up in Love and Just Don’t Wait Around ‘Til She’s Leavin’ and We Can’t All Be Angles. The last track from the list appeared on the soundtrack of the 1998 American action thriller, ‘Black Dog.’
Shifting Focus to Songwriting and Tryin’ to Get There
Following the release of ‘We Can’t All Be Angeles,’ David Lee Murphy began focusing on songwriting. He spent the early 2000s writing hits for Aaron Tippin, Trick Pony, Hank Williams Jr, Montgomery Gentry and Brooks & Dunn. As he was making his name as a lyricist, Koch Entertainment presented him with a recording contract which he signed in 2004 and Murphy then released his fourth studio album, ‘Tryin’ to Get There’ later that year. Produced by him and Kim Tribble, the album failed to perform as expected and received a lukewarm response from the critics. He then decided to take a hiatus from recording new music.
Making a Comeback
David Lee Murphy’s good friend and six-time Grammy nominated country megastar, Kenny Chesney persuaded him to record new music during the late 2010s. As a result, he made his comeback with his fifth studio album, ‘No Zip Code’ which was released on April 6, 2018. It yielded a collaborative single with Chesney titled, Everything’s Gonna Be Alright which helped him top the Country Airplay chart for the second time.
Murphy has now set out on tour and will be trying his latest album, ‘No Zip Code’ on the road by performing several shows throughout North America. So, don’t wait anymore and get these David Lee Murphy tickets today if you want to party with him live.
