Smith’s Early Career
Born Dallas Hendry Smith in Langley, British Columbia, Smith was into music from an early age. He was influenced both by the best of rock bands like The Beatles and country bands like The Judds and Reba McEntire. Perhaps this is why his music is described as country and country rock. A child prodigy, Smith was also shy and therefore hesitant in performing publicly. Nonetheless, he overcame his shyness and performed cover songs with some of his friends. He was so good that at the age of 21 he signed a record deal.
Before he embarked on his illustrious solo career, Smith had a successful career with a band named Default; he was the lead vocalist and played occasional rhythm guitar for them.
Default is a famous Canadian hard rock/post-grunge band from Vancouver. It was formed in 1999 and since then has released four studio albums. The band has sold more than a million records. Default’s biggest success was its single, “Wasting My Time” from its debut album The Fallout. The single reached No.13 on the Billboard Hot 100. Smith was a co-writer of the song. The single itself was such a huge commercial hit that it helped the band’s debut album sell over one million records, thus getting certified Platinum in the US.
Default’s other three albums, namely Elocation, One Thing Remains and Comes and Goes also charted on the Billboard 200.
Dallas Smith Solo
In 2012, Smith went solo with the release of his debut album Jumped Right In. A commercial blockbuster that also garnered favorable reviews from the critics, Jumped Right In reached No.19 on the Canadian Albums Chart and spawned five singles that also charted individually on the Canadian Hot 100. The album was nominated for Canadian Country Music Association and Juno Awards.
It is pertinent to mention here that at the end of 2012, Smith had been declared the most played Canadian country act by Mediabase.
Lifted, Smith’s second studio album was released in 2014. The album reached No.6 on the US Top Heatseekers Albums chart. The album spawned six mega-hit singles that also charted individually on a variety of charts including Canada Country and Canadian Hot 100 charts. These singles were, “Cheap Seats,” “Lifted,” “Wastin’ Gas,” “A Girl Like You,” “Slow Rollin’” and “Tippin’ Point.”
In 2016, Smith latest album, Side Effects was released. The album debuted at No.7 on the Canadian Albums chart, while three of its singles, namely “Sky Stays This Blue,” “Side Effects” and “Autograph” debuted at No.1 on the Canada Country albums chart.
In November, 2012, Smith co-headlined the sold-out Boys of Fall Tour. In addition, in 2012 and 2013, he performed at various Canadian country festivals. In 2013, Smith again played to a series of sold-out concerts as Bob Seger’s Canada tour. During the same year, he also supported another country music super star Jason Aldean on his North America leg of the tour.
