Originally a black metal band, Cradle of Filth experimented with its sound, transition to a cleaner mix of gothic and symphonic metal, with lyrics influenced by poetry, gothic literature, horror films and mythology. From an underground band during its earliest years, it has gone commercial and become a mainstream fixture, receiving widespread coverage on MTV and Kerrang! It has also performed live at festivals such as the Sziget Festival, Ozzfest and the Download festival.
Cradle of Filth released three demos during its first years and worked on an album, beings signed onto Tombstone Records. Following that, they were signed onto Cacophonous Records, releasing their debut studio album in 1994, labeled The Principle of Evil Made Flesh. It was highly successful, going so far as to be ranked as one of the top ten black metal albums by Metal Hammer. Their next release was an EP whose songs gained much fame, with one of them ranked by Kerrang! as one of its twenty five Essential Extreme Metal Anthems.
In 1996, Cradle of Filth moved to label Music for Nations and was soon joined by female singer Sarah Jezebel Deva, who is also known for bands such as Therion, Mortiis, The Kovenant and Angtoria. In 1997, they released their critically acclaimed breakthrough album, Dusk…and Her Embrace. This album was famous all over Europe, gaining listeners as far as the US. In 1998, they were part of a documentary series by the BBC, labeled Living with the Enemy.
Cradle of Filth ’s third album was its first US album, which was met with much commercial and critical acclaim. In 2000, they released a fourth album, based on Clive Barker’s Cabal. It featured guest narrator Doug Bradley, best known for playing Pinhead in the Hellraiser series of movies. He would go on to narrate voices on Nymphetamine, Godspeed on Devil’s Thunder and Thornography. The band’s music videos received a lot of airplay on MTV, and have been part of the soundtrack of movies such as Resident Evil and Ginger Snaps.
In 2003, they were signed onto Sony Records, performing for the first time with a real orchestra, the Budapest Film Orchestra and Choir. The result, Damnation, a symphonic album with the most complex compositions from the band. One of its songs made it to the UK Top 40 Charts, gaining a Guinness Book of Records place for the first DVD only single to grab a spot on the charts. Their 2004 album, Nymphetamine, not only debuted on the Billboard 200 chart but also gained a Grammy Award nomination, a first for a metal band that deserves to be seen play live through purchased Cradle of Filth tickets.
