A Charlie Brown Christmas: The Idea
Charles M. Schulz’s famous comic strip, Peanuts had become a major hit in early 1960s which led to television producer, Lee Mendelson thinking about making a documentary based on its success. The two soon met and after the approval of Schulz, he started working on a half-hour documentary set. After the project completed, Mendelson tried to sell it to major television networks but despite the strip’s popularity, no one was interested in buying it.
In April of 1965, the Peanuts gang appeared on the cover of Time Magazine after which Lee Mendelson received a phone call from John Allen of the New York-based McCann Erickson Agency. Allen asked him to produce an animated half-hour Peanuts Christmas special. Thinking he would be able to sell the documentary to him, Mendelson readily accepted and called Schulz to brief him about the entire situation. The duo then immediately got to work and soon created an outline for the special which featured a soundtrack combining jazz and traditional music, winter scenes, a scene to be read from the bible and a school play.
Mendelson and Schulz then presented this outline to Coca-Cola who became interested in buying the special. However, the company gave them just six months to complete the project as they wanted the show to broadcast in early December. The duo then started to put together a team and soon A Charlie Brown Christmas entered the production phase.
Working On The Special
While working on the script for A Charlie Brown Christmas, Charles M. Schulz’s main goal was to deliver the message about the true meaning of Christmas through this special. He then invited Lee Mendelson and animator, Bill Melendez to his house so that the trio can jot down ideas for the show. During their session, Mendelson recalled that he and his spouse had read a fairy tale, ‘The Fir-Tree’ by Christian Anderson to their children previous Christmas. That led to Schulz coming up with the idea of including a tree in the show with the spirit of the special’s lead character, Charlie Brown. He then decided not to include the laugh track and began writing the script of the show which he completed in a matter of a few weeks.
Mendelson, Melendez and Schulz then started the casting process and selected an acclaimed actor, Peter Robbins as Charlie Brown, Chris Shea as Linus Van Pelt and Tracy Stratford as Lucille "Lucy" Van Pelt. The trio also casted, Kathy Steinberg as Sally Brown while Melendez himself voice acted the character of Snoopy.
A Christmas Staple
A Charlie Brown Christmas was completed just ten days before the scheduled date of its national broadcast debut. While all involved in its making thought it was going to be a disaster, one of the animators, Ed Levitt thought differently and called it a masterpiece after viewing it in a theater before its premiere. The executives behind this show then called Richard Burgheim of Time to view the show. He was impressed by the work and said, “A Charlie Brown Christmas is one children's special this season that bears repeating.”
The show debuted on December 9, 1965 on CBS. It became an instant hit with major publications including, The Hollywood Reporter, New York Post, Weekly Variety and The Washington Post all praising the show. The special ultimately became a Christmas staple in the U.S. for many decades and inspired the creation of many other popular shows including, ‘Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer’ and ‘How the Grinch Stole Christmas!’ It also won a Peabody and an Emmy Award.
