The Fifth Harmony years
Camila Cabello was interested in singing from the beginning. She soon decided to pick music as a career choice and went on to audition for The X Factor. There, she sang the cover of, Respect by Aretha Franklin but was eliminated from the show. However, Cabello was called back to form a group with four other contestants, Normani Kordei, Ally Brooke, Dinah Jane and Lauren Jauregui. The group was named, Fifth Harmony.
On January 17, 2013, Fifth Harmony signed a joint record deal with Simon Cowell’s label, Syco Music and L.A. Reid’s label, Epic Records. Cabello and the girls then quickly hit the studio and wrote eleven songs for their first studio record. On January 30, 2015, the band issued, ‘Reflection’ which made the Rolling Stone’s list of the, ’20 Best Pop Albums of 2015.’ Moreover, it received a 78/100 rating from Metacritic and reached fifth spot on the Billboard 200. The album was also certified platinum by the RIAA and offered three singles, Boss, Sledgehammer and Worth It. Worth it peaked at the twelfth spot on the Billboard 200 and achieved multi-platinum status in Australia, Canada, Italy and the United States.
In 2015, Camila Cabello started to record her last album with Fifth Harmony titled, ‘7/27.’ It was released on May 27, 2016 and gathered positive feedback from publications like, AllMusic, Rolling Stone and Digital Spy. In addition, it went on to sell more than one million copies in the U.S. and gave a single, Work From Home which won them an American Music Award. Following the release of the record, Cabello shocked the world by announcing her departure from the band.
Embarking on a solo journey
Camila Cabello commenced her solo journey by collaborating on a couple of songs, I Know What You Did Last Summer by Shawn Mendes and Bad Things by Machine Gun Kelly. Both tracks sold millions of copies in the States and received praise from the critics. The former track won two iHeartRadio Much Music Video Awards while the latter earned a Billboard Music Award nomination in the category of, ‘Top Rap Collaboration.’
She then spent much of 2017 working with other stars like, Cashmere Cat, Pitbull and Major Lazer on songs, Love Incredible, Hey Ma and Know No Better respectively. Hey Ma was awarded triple platinum certification in Spain and featured on the soundtrack of the film, ‘The Fate of the Furious.’
On January 12, 2018, Camila Cabello came out with her first solo studio LP, ‘Camila’ which became a chart-topping success in the U.S, Canada and Spain. It had the critics raving and publications including, AllMusic and Rolling Stone gave the album three and a half stars out of five. The record also spawned two singles, Havana and Never Be the Same out of which the former topped charts in major countries and recorded multi-platinum level sales in, the United States, Canada, Italy, New Zealand, Australia and Belgium.
