The foundations of the punk rock band were laid in 1992 when bassist/vocalist Mark Hoppus was introduced to guitarist/vocalist Tom DeLonge by his sister in August 1992. Both the high school boys were interested in music and in forming a band and instantly became friends. They joined hands with drummer Scott Raynor and the band initially known as Blink was formed.
The band’s first album "Flyswatter" was recorded in Raynor’s bedroom in May 1993 after the band had constantly practiced their music for a year. However, the acoustics were not of good quality so the band went on to record another demo tape simply titled "Demo #2" with some old songs from "Flyswatter" and some new songs. The third demo "Buddha" was also recorded the same year but in a proper studio called Double Time Studios in San Diego. The band believed in itself and persevered in its music along with performing at clubs, local high schools, etc. and eventually gained popularity due to the band member’s humorous stage shows. The first major breakthrough came when Blink signed to Cargo Music, a small record label. The first official album "Cheshire Cat" was released in 1994 with melodious singles like "M + M’s" and "Wasting Time. The album exposed the band to a wider audience beyond California. It was followed by the successful Warped Tour of 1996-1997 and Blink gathered a steady fan following.
Unfortunately, Blink had to change its name to Blink 182 as an Irish band with the same name threatened with a lawsuit. However, the name change did not hinder the band’s path towards success as it had already gained media attention due to its successful live performances and several snowboarding/skate/surf videos. Through 1993 and 1994, Blink 182 released two EPs and finally released its second album titled "Dude Ranch" in 1996 after moving to Encinitas, California. The album with the fantastic single "Dammit" sold 1.5 million copies worldwide. Again, some successful touring provided the band’s fans with the magic of its live performances and added to its popularity. However, the band had to go through a lineup change due to the leaving of the drummer, Scott Raynor. The position was filled by Travis Barker and the band was again complete to work on their third album, "Enema of the State".
"Enema of the State" released in 1999 brought Blink 182 to newer heights of stardom as the album sold 15 million copies worldwide and contained smashing hits like "All the Small Things", "What’s My Age Again?" and "Adam’s Song". The double platinum in US album "Take off Your Pants and Jacket" came out in 2001 followed by the mature album "Blink 182" in 2003. With great songs like "Feeling This" and "I Miss You", the band experimented with newer sounds owing to lifestyle changes as all the band members became fathers before the album release. Blink 182 was going strong but decided to take a hiatus and give more time to the respective families. The following years saw the band members working on separate projects. Barker survived a fatal plane crash and the incident brought the band members in close contact with each other. 2009 saw Blink 182 coming back officially to work on its next album; touring was also commenced. The sixth album "Neighborhoods" came out in 2011 and saw the old magic being revived with great songs like "Up All Night".
Winners of numerous MTV Music awards, Blink 182 is known for its rocking live performances. See it in action and groove and cheer with all the other fans. Its performance is simply mind blowing and the live concert is a must event to attend. So, what are you waiting for?
