Often credited for inventing hardcore punk music by eliminating the pop and upbeat melodies that were the bread and butter of British punks during the seventies and eighties, Black Flag is known for taking a bold step by introducing raw, aggressive and powerful guitar sounds into their music. They redefined the basic punk aesthetics in America by bringing the genre of punk to its true form. Black Flag became the inspiration of thousands of hardcore punk American bands that came during the eras of eighties and nineties but none of them could satisfy audiences the way their mentor was able to.
Since the year of the band’s inception, it toured ceaselessly throughout America, cultivating and nurturing the underground punk scene. Black Flag was able to produce edgy, ferocious and gut-pounding metal sounds before punk and metal fusion became popular. The band is unquestionably and undoubtedly one of the most influential post-punk American bands present.
Their releases have not only portrayed meaningful political viewpoints and social critiques, but also depicted cynical torments that borderline being humorous. Even though the lineup of the group changed quite a few times over the years, they remained true to the basic purpose behind Black Flag’s survival.
Coming forth in 1976, the American group was created by primary songwriter, guitarist and sole continuous member, Greg Ginn. Based in Hermosa Beach, California, Black Flag was able to shake the American punk scene upon their arrival till the band’s breakup in 1986.The band was then seen reuniting in 2003, playing reunion shows throughout Long Beach and Hollywood, after which Black Flag officially regrouped as a band in 2013.
The current lineup of the band consists of Ron Reyes providing vocals, founder Greg Ginn playing guitar, Dave Klein on bass and Gregory Moore handling the drums. Apart from embarking on a tour, the four announced that they will be coming forth with a new album as well; their first release ever since their last studio album came out in 1985, In My Head. This album will be their seventh studio album over a career that has lasted for over three decades.
While discussing the band’s albums, it is a crime to miss out on their debut album that was recorded in 1981; a punk album that hasn’t been equaled as yet. Released via Ginn’s record label company SST Records, their release "Damaged" received massive fame and success. Even though several controversies were related with the album and the band had to fight a law suit against Unicorn Records, this album outshined all the critique from the opposition and became the most important document release of its time. Damaged presented some of the band’s most popular songs such as "Rise Above", "Six Pack", "TV Party" and "Damaged I".
Working on creating songs and touring for a period of three years, Black Flag amazed its fans by presenting three studio releases in 1984; My War, Family Man and Slip It In. These albums presented the same aggressiveness as their debut release, with lyrics that talked about everything from people to the choices they make, their jealousies and paranoia’s. The albums presented several instrumental tracks as well such as "My Ghetto" and "Obliteration" that highlighted guitarist Ginn’s personal growth as a musician. The following year saw two further fruitful album releases; Loose Nut and In My Head, records that presented cohesive grunge-metal bluesy sounds.
It was then in 1986 that Ginn decided to quit his own band so as to pursue a career as a solo artist. After a period of almost twenty six years, Black Flag has officially reformed; news which will excite fans all over the world. With their revival, audiences now have a chance to watch them perform live once again. Do not miss out the upcoming performances and get Black Flag tickets immediately.
