About Big Bad Voodoo Daddy
Big Bad Voodoo Daddy was formed in 1989 by Scotty Morris. He spent the early years of the 1980s playing in numerous alternative rock and punk bands including False Confession. He was originally part of the Oxnard, California Nardcore scene.
Soon after, he decided to form Big Bad Voodoo Daddy with Kurt Sodergren. He got the name for the band after he met legendary blues guitarist Albert Collins. At the meeting with Collins after one of his concerts, he signed a poster for Scotty. When recalling the incident, this is what Scotty explains:
"He signed my poster 'To Scotty, the big bad voodoo daddy'. I thought it was the coolest name I ever heard on one of the coolest musical nights I ever had. So when it came time to name this band, I didn't really have a choice. I felt like it was handed down to me."
In their early years, the band concentrated on playing music which was influenced by the swing of the 1940s and 1950s. They also played smaller shows at that time, typically at clubs and lounges.
The other members of the band joined later on. Today, the band is made up of lead vocalist and guitarist Scotty Morris, drummer and percussionist Kurt Sodergren, back-up vocalist and double-bassist Dirk Shumaker, back-up vocalist and baritone saxophonist Andy Rowley, trumpet player Glen "The Kid" Marhevka, clarinet and saxophonist Karl Hunter, and pianist and arranger Joshua Levy.
The band is also joined by two more members when they are on tour: trombonist Alex "Crazy Legs" Henderson and lead trumpet player Mitchell Cooper.
The Big Bad Voodoo Daddy Effect
In the years that they have been active the band has released 9 full length studio albums including Big Bad Voodoo Daddy (1994), Americana Deluxe (1998), This Beautiful Life (1999), Save My Soul (2003), Everything You Want for Christmas (2004), How Big Can You Get?: The Music of Cab Calloway (2009), Rattle Them Bones (2012), It Feels Like Christmas Time (2013) and Louie, and Louie, Louie (2017).
They also released a live album in 2004, Big Bad Voodoo Daddy Live, which was a CD + DVD set. In addition, in 1997 they released the extended play Watchu' Want for Christmas?
Before they got their big break however, the band released their first album Big Bad Voodoo Daddy and the previously mentioned extended play, Watchu' Want for Christmas? through their own label called Big Bad Records. Their breakthrough moment came when three of their singles, "Go Daddy-O", "You & Me & the Bottle Makes 3 Tonight (Baby)", and "I Wan'na Be Like You" were featured in the soundtrack for the 1996 comedy-drama movie, Swingers.
They then went on to play at the Super Bowl XXXIII half-time show in 1999 which expanded their audience exponentially.
