Peters is known across the US for her highly acclaimed musical performances on Broadway. Her profile boasts of years of experience in show business, which started when she was only a toddler. Her role in the Juvenile Jury launched her as a child actress and dancer. She was immensely successful since she started and got to make numerous appearances in various shows thereafter. She also got a chance to participate in a dancing contest 'Name That Tune' where she outshined the rest and became the best dance contestant of the show. Later, she made an appearance in 'The Horn And Hadart's Children Hour' as Sophie Tucker, that got her noticed for maturing acts as she grew older. All these events collectively pushed Peters to make a decision to remain in entertainment industry. She made a commitment there and then and is fulfilling it to date.
During her adolescent years Bernadette Peters was a part of the star cast of shows namely 'The Most Happy Fella', 'The Penny Friend' and 'The Girl in the Freudian Slip'. Later she acted in two NBC Television shows 'A Boy Called Ciske' and 'The Christmas Tree' that polished her acting and dancing skills. However, she never felt complete as an artist and wanted to master the art of music and dance formally. She enrolled in the Quintao's School for Young Professionals and got formal training in the disciples of singing and acting. While training she kept in touch with theater. Her role in the 1968, got huge recognition in an off-Broadway musical titled 'Dames at Sea’; as Ruby the chorus girl she proved that she was a star in the making.
Her singing career started off with her performance in the next summer season of 'Dainty June'. Subsequently, she released her first single that took her to heights of fame when the single became an instant hit. This success paved way for her to play the song Leisl in 'The Sound of Music' and Jenny in 'Riverwind' at Mt. Gretna Playhouse in 1964. In 1966, she played the single 'Riverwind' again at Bucks County Playhouse. All these songs allowed Peters to explore music and Broadway together and come up with her signature song and dance that would make a celebrity in the future.
Following the singing career Peters also she made her way into Broadway. Her musical debut here started when she sang for 'Johnny No-Trump' and 'George M!' She won critical and public acclaim for the first time for her performance in a musical 'On The Town' as Brunehilde Esterhazy through a Tony Award nomination in 1971. She debuted in films in 1973 in 'Ace Eli and Roger of the Skies'. Following this, she starred in numerous other movies like 'The Longest Yard', 'Vigilante Force' and 'Silent Movie'. In 1974, she created a character for the first time titled Mabel Normand. Normand was part of the musical 'Mack and Mabel' which earned a Tony nomination for Peters.
In 1981 Bernadette received her first Golden Globe award for a movie 'Pennies from Heaven'. Also she released her first studio record 'Now Playing' in parallel Furthermore, a nomination in the Tony Awards for her role as Dot in the prize-winning musical 'Sunday in the Park with George' came her way. After this Peters got really lucky and received her first Tony Award, Drama Desk and Drama League Award in 1985 for the Best Leading Actress in a musical in 'Song and Dance'.
In 1992, she released another album Bernadette. Her outstanding career throughout made her the youngest recruit in the Theater Hall of Fame'. Her solo single ‘I’ll Be Your Baby Tonight was acknowledged by a Grammy Award nomination. She was acclaimed one again in 1999 when a Tony and a Grammy Award in came her way for 'Annie Get Your Gun'.
In 2006, she made guest appearances in famous primetime shows 'Will and Grace' and 'Grey's Anatomy'. Also she had her debut solo concert at Lincoln Center in New York in the same year. In 2008, she wrote a book 'Broadway Barks' which came with a CD of her reading the story and singing a lullaby. Being such a multi-talented artist, Bernadette has excelled in every field of showbiz she had pursued.
