Early Years
Born in 1982 in Concord, Massachusetts, McMahon lived in New Jersey until the year 1991 following which he relocated to Bexley, Ohio with his family. After the death of his uncle who himself was an artist, McMahon found himself deeply inspired and inclined towards music. Soon he learned to play the piano. His family decided to live in California so that he could complete his schooling. McMahon however was more inclined towards arts than academics. He graduated in the year 2000 from the Dana Hills High School.
Left Here
McMahon formed his first music band “Left Here” when he was still in high school. Besides him, the band had the future “Something Corporate” band mates Brian Ireland on drums and Kevin ‘Clutch’ Page on bass. But soon they disbanded following which McMahon recorded a four-track demo CD with the help of his friends that included guitarist Josh Partington. They were joined by rhythm guitarist Reuben Hernandez and soon emerged as a piano rock band Something Corporate.
Something Corporate
With Andrew McMahon as the front man, Something Corporate recorded and self-released their ten-track demo record ‘Ready…Break’ in the year 2000. The album led them to a contract with Drive-Thru Records under which the band released the EP ‘Audioboxer.’ McMahon’s vocals and piano won the album a lot of attention and appreciation owing to which the band was signed by Drive-Thru’s distributer, MCA. Something Corporate hence made their major label debut in 2002 with ‘Leaving Through the Window.’ The band has performed reunion tours but is no longer signed to any record label.
Solo Project
Jack’s Mannequin was a rock band that started out as a solo project for McMahon. The band released the album ‘Everything in Transit’ in 2005. The record made it to the Billboard 200 at number 37. The next release by the band was ‘The Glass Passenger.’ Released in 2008, this album reached the top ten on the Billboard 200 and sold 49,000 copies in its first week of release. Shortly after the release of ‘People and Things’ in 2011, McMahon announced that in future he would make music under his own name and not Jack’s Mannequin anymore.
Andrew McMahon in the Wilderness
‘Andrew McMahon in the Wilderness’ is the pianist’s first self-titled music album. It was released via Vanguard Records in October, 2014. Its single ‘Cecila and the Satellite’ preceded the release of the album. Other tracks on the album include ‘See Her On The Weekend,’ ‘Canyon Moon’ and ‘High Dive.’ The record has received positive reviews from the critics and its songs are fast gaining popularity among the fans.
