How it started
Born in 1987, Anderson East is the alias of Michael Cameron Anderson. East attended Athens High School and wrote his first song, Brains when he was in seventh grade. He later started to spend more time honing his songwriting ability and also learned to play the piano. His passion for music took him to great lengths to just get his hands on an album. He said in an interview with Paste recently about those times,
“Music was kind of a precious commodity growing up.” He also added “There was no delineation between good and bad at that point. It was amazing just because you had it.”
East then enrolled himself at the Middle Tennessee State University where he studied musical engineering. After a couple of years, he moved to Nashville to turn his dreams of becoming a star into reality. In 2009, East decided to start his career as a singer and as a result of that, he released heartfelt songs like, Quit You, Say Anything and Lonely.
While trying to establish himself, Anderson East hit it big when he was asked to open for Holly Williams. He ended up working as a session musician and a recording engineer for her. A while later, East dropped a self-released album, ‘Closing Credits for a Fire’ in 2009. He wrote ten songs for that record including, Bone Dry, Early October and I’m Still Waiting. A year later, East recorded six songs for his debut extended play, ‘Fire Demos.’ He followed that up by spawning his second EP, ‘Transitive Property’ which hit the markets in 2011. It featured songs like, When Jane (Comes Calling) and Right Words.
In 2012, East churned out his second self-released studio LP, ‘Flowers of the Broken Hearted.’ It came out in two discs and consisted of eight songs on the first disc while the second included seven tracks. The album became a hit in the United States and also allowed him to build a national fan following. On April 9, 2013, he spawned a collaborative song with Jill Andrews called, Say Anything which became very popular. It also featured on the ABC’s hit show, ‘Grey’s Anatomy.’
Anderson East signed with Elektra Records and came out with his debut major-label studio album, ‘Delilah’ on July 10, 2015. It was produced by Dave Cobb who has previously worked with many famous stars including, Shooter Jennings, Jason Isbell, Sturgill Simpson, Europe and the two-time Grammy winner, Chris Stapleton. The album had ten new songs out of which, Satisfy Me and Devil in Me were put out as singles. Both tracks received airplay throughout the United States and peaked at the eighteenth and twenty ninth spot on the Adult Alternative Songs chart respectively. In addition, East also released the music video of, Devil in Me.
‘Delilah’ did well on the music charts and landed at the seventh and second spot on the US Folk and Top Heatseekers chart respectively. It was also praised by American Songwriter as the publication gave it four stars out of five.
Upcoming album and tour
Anderson East is now gearing up to drop his sophomore studio effort. He has already unveiled the name of his upcoming studio project and it’s called, ‘Encore.’ Moreover, East also put out the lead single of the album titled, All On My Mind on August 18, 2017.
