Founded in the early 2000s by brothers Chris and Adam Rupp, Home Free has certainly come a very long way since its inception. Let’s take a look at their musical journey.
Musical Background & Style
Unlike a lot of musicians and bands today, all five members of Home Free have formal musical training. The Rupp brothers and Lundquist all have bachelor’s degree in music and a proper understanding of various trivial musical concepts. The primary instrument used by Adam Rupp is the trumpet, but he is also very well-versed in the use of drums, keyboard and bass guitar. Foust and Brown have also become very active in the arrangement and writing areas for the band and contribute greatly to its final, unique sound.
The lead tenor, Austin Brown, takes the front position in most of the group’s solos. Tenor harmony is handled by Rob Lundquist, Tim Foust takes care of bass harmony and the baritone harmony is sung by Adam Chance. In addition to these very talented four vocals, percussion sounds are added by the beatboxer Adam Rupp.
The band got involved with country music only recently. Before that, their sound incorporated a lot of unique and different elements of a variety of musical styles – country music for them was only a minor concern. But with the addition of Brown and Foust to their lineup, their sound started to focus more on country music elements. And when they found audiences reacting well to this change, they decided to adopt it on a wider scale than before. Prior to their victory season on The Sing Off, the band had auditioned for the competition three times and failed. This time, they made a conscious effort to present themselves as a country group largely. And it worked out perfectly for them!
Discography of Home Free
Over the years, the band has released several albums. Their first album was titled From the Top, and it was released in 2007, with band member Chris Rupp, Adam Rupp, Matt Atwood and Joe Fine. Next came their album Kickin' It Old School in 2009 with band members including the Rupp brothers, Attwood, Lundquist and Robinson. In March 2010, they released Christmas Vol 1, followed by Christmas Vol 2. Livin' From the Road was released in 2012, and band member Tim Foust was added to the lineup. Following this, the next album was Crazy Life in 2014, and Full of Cheer, the same year. The former was released under Columbia Records, while the latter was released under Sony. The latest album released by the band is Country Evolution, under the label, Sony, on September 18, 2015. This album reached the number 4 spot on the US Country charts and sold 34,100 copies in the country.
In addition to albums, the band has also released the hit single “Angels We Have Heard on High” in the year 2014. The single reached the 30th position in the US Country charts and was a part of the album Full of Cheer.
