Wolf Trap National Park for the Performing Arts is known to be one of the hottest venues for some of the best events in the city. The first music festival to occur at the venue was the National Folk Festival in the year 1971. The same year, the venue was graced by the presence of a US President, Richard Nixon, who was the first president to attend an event at the Park. He attended the Musical Theater Cavacade on the 12th of August.
Another notable event that occurred at the venue in its initial stage was the Scottish Military Tattoo, which performed in the year 1976. Prince Philip was also present at this event. In the year 1978, dancers and acrobatic groups from the People’s Republic of China performed at this prestigious venue. This was one of the earliest examples of cultural exchanges between the United States and China.
Until the early 80’s, the Wolf Trap played host to the National Folk Festival every year. Some of the other highlights of the venue include the farewell performance of Beverly Sills in ’80, the Overture shows of the U.S. National Symphony Orchestra which included live cannons, the Preservation Hall Jazz Band, the Royal Ballet, the opera of War and Peace by Sarah Caldwell and countless more as well.
