The original Capitol Theater known as "the palace of gold" was a virtual slap in the face of the impending stock market bust that was being engineered concurrently and was brought about soon after. Being the largest movie theater at its time in the region, it incorporated a marriage of Spanish, Oriental and English interiors that was crowned on top by an ornate octagonal dome. The theater featured a cornucopia of sweeping staircases that were illuminated by brazen chandeliers and grandiloquent ornamentation that adorned the proscenium arch a la mode, complete with a state-of-the-art projection equipment and theater organ. The renovations carried out at the onset of the nineties sought to rekindle the bygone glory of the Capitol Theater within the nascent Williamsport Community Arts Center.
