Whether it's the Jewel of the Nile or the Jewel in the Crown, the lure of the treasures of the orient is irresistible for the occident, whose delegates under the guise of traders, archeologists and eventually colonizers have plundered the mineral bowels and the agricultural basins of the respective regions. The Williamsport Community Arts Center literally rose like a phoenix from the ashes of the old Williamsport’s Sterling Hotel in the Roaring Twenties and then after nearly six decades of hibernation and near-death experience, had its reincarnation in the early nineties. The seminal structure of the Capitol Theater proudly opened its doors in 1928 as one of the last remnants of the age of the so-called movie-palaces and served the local community till it bowed out due in the wake of the havoc wreaked by the 1936 flood. Narrowly escaping the wrecking ball in the ensuing decades, Williamsport denizens experienced a second awakening of the Capitol Theater in the form of the Community Arts Center in 1993 after a round of intensive renovations that came at a price tag of $ 13.5 million, with The Penn College pitching in more than 60% of the cost.
The original Capitol Theater known as "the palace of gold" was a virtual slap in the face of the impending stock market bust that was being engineered concurrently and was brought about soon after. Being the largest movie theater at its time in the region, it incorporated a marriage of Spanish, Oriental and English interiors that was crowned on top by an ornate octagonal dome. The theater featured a cornucopia of sweeping staircases that were illuminated by brazen chandeliers and grandiloquent ornamentation that adorned the proscenium arch a la mode, complete with a state-of-the-art projection equipment and theater organ. The renovations carried out at the onset of the nineties sought to rekindle the bygone glory of the Capitol Theater within the nascent Williamsport Community Arts Center.
Seating around 2,000 people, the Williamsport Community Arts Center has had a whole array of scintillating musical and theatrical acts grace its stage. Everyone from the illusion maestro David Copperfield to the king of comedy Bill Cosby as well as Anne Murray, Willie Nelson, and Barry Manilow have landed upon the Williamsport Community Arts Center.
