As the 2000’s came around, the need for a brand new arena in Kansas City was felt more strongly than ever before. One of the biggest reasons for that was the increase in the number of new state-of-the-art venues being erected everywhere else in the country. Kansas already had the Kemper Arena but the need for an upgraded facility was still felt to keep the place in the mix. Work on the plans of a new arena began. Once everything was put in place, the ground was broken on 25th January, 2005. After almost two and a half years of immense hard work, the wonderful Sprint Center opened its gate for the public on 10th October, 2007.
The arena gave downtown Kansas a fresh look once completed especially because of its design and architecture. A team of different architectural companies were put together to make one Downtown Arena Design Team. The responsibility of the entire project was handed to M.A. Mortenson Company. The outer walls of the building are made up of glass. That and all the metal panels put in use in the arena and the buildings next to it were customized and produced by Overgaard Ltd from Hong Kong. The building has about one hundred thirty nine thousand nine hundred and thirty two square feet of glass used in its completion. On top of that there are another fifty three thousands eight hundred and twenty square feet of wall panels that are made up of aluminum. The center also comprises of two thousand four hundred and four spate glass pieces that were put together in a particular order before they were loaded onboard.
The Sprint Center hosted its first event on 10th October, 2007. It was a concert by none other than the legendary Elton John. Sprint Center tickets for that event were completely sold-out in less than a minute and a half. The venue can play host to nineteen thousand people at a time and it was packed to the rafters for its first show. Since then Britney Spears, Garth Brooks, George Strait and Madonna have all performed there. It has also played host to major sporting events which include basketball, PBR events, AFL games and WWE shows to solidify its status among the most sought after arenas in the country today. The pride of Kansas is set to offer another exciting line-up of events to grace its annual calendar so make sure you are there to be a part of the festivities.
