When the profile of the NBA started getting bigger in the 1980’s it was decided that the Portland Trailblazers needed to move from their current home at that time, the Memorial Coliseum. The Trailblazers needed a much bigger venue and when the team was bought by the billionaire Paul Allen in 1988 he got the ball rolling to construct the Rose Garden, a multi-purpose building. He established a company Oregon Arena Corporation which was to look after the construction and subsequent management of the venue. The financing for the construction was mostly done by private financers and the remaining amount was contributed by Allen, the City of Portland and a bond which was to be financed by the revenues generated by parking and tickets sales.
The groundbreaking ceremony was conducted in 1993 and the stunning Rose Garden, constructed with an estimated cost of two hundred and sixty seven million dollars, opened its doors for the public for the first time in 1995. It is an amazing venue which can hold over nineteen thousand people for a basketball game and the seating can be adjusted for other events according to the requirement. One of unique features of the Rose Garden is the acoustical cloud, which is a group of one hundred and sixty acoustic panels hung for the roof the arena to create a loud noise. The Rose Garden has a staggering seventy skyboxes which are completely furnished with every possible luxury imagined.
The first game at the venue was played between the Portland Trailblazers and the Vancouver Grizzlies on 3rd November, 1995 but that game wasn’t the first event to be held at the Rose Garden. That honor goes to David Bowie who staged a concert at the venue. The Garden has also played host to various other major events as well which included WWE events and pay per views, NBA Western Conference Finals, the Dew Action Sports Tour, concerts and figure skating events etc.
The Rose Garden is a beautiful venue which has played a huge part in giving the area its own identity. It is also one of the very few arenas around the country which is built without burdening the taxpayers. People who are aware of the splendor of the arena buy the Rose Garden tickets in droves to make every event a sell-out and a memorable experience for anyone lucky enough to be there.
