The city of Richmond in Virginia has a history spanning some four centuries and has played an important role in shaping the cultural landscape of the region. This was the site of the Powhatan Confederacy that had the Native American tribes defending their lands against the European invaders. The city itself was established in the first half of the 18th century and within a couple of decades emerged as a major industrial center, specializing in metal works, foundries, flour processing and the like, all powered by the hydropower courtesy the nearby Richmond Falls.
Residents of Broad Street in Richmond started seeing a site under construction in the vicinity of the iconic Carpenter Theatre since it closed for repairs and renovation in 2004. For a number of years, there was nothing more than a huge hole in the ground for everyone to wager upon what the finished structure would look like. Finally in 2009, the local residents had their answer. What had been initially dubbed as the Virginia Performing Arts Center later acquired its current moniker of CenterStage and entailed a price tag of $73 million. This translated into significant changes to the façade of the legendary Carpenter Theater as well as a couple of new additions, the first and foremost being Rhythm Hall that is located on the Dorothy Pauley Square’s first floor.
Rhythm Hall has been provisioning for both local and international artists, world-class concerts and other social gatherings such as weddings, bar mitzvahs, dance practices, workshops and other rehearsals. The venue is frequented by a diverse set of performers that range from standup comedians to solo music artists. Some or the other event is always happening at the Rhythm Hall, whether it’s the afternoon or evening. Patrons can not only satisfy their entertainment needs but also their culinary ones, what with there being a kitchen on site that offers full catering.
Acts such as the Richmond Jazz Society are regular performers at the Rhythm Hall, as is the CenterStage Comedy Club that features acts such as West End Comedy a la Whose Line is it Anyway. So claim those Rhythm Hall tickets for immersing you and your loved ones in an eclectic mix of quality entertainment that keeps on getting better with time.
