The Progress Energy Center Raleigh Memorial Auditorium was opened to the public back in 1932, built as a replacement for the City Auditorium which burned down in a fire in 1930. It was named as the Raleigh Memorial Auditorium in remembrance of the many citizens from Raleigh who served the nation in the First World War. Located at the end of Fayetteville Street, it was built in the Greek Revival structure, similar to the North Carolina State Capitol found near the auditorium.
 
Since its founding, the Progress Energy Center Raleigh Memorial Auditorium has been improved several times in 1963 and 1977. It has also been renovated once, in 1990, when a lobby and an external modern glass concourse were added. It consists of nearly two thousand three hundred seats and is best known for playing host to musical productions, many of them Broadway hits.
