The History

The Volunteers used to play at the Baldwin Park in the beginning and from there they moved to the Wait Field in 1909. Colonel W.S. Shields provided the funding for a new football field and the stadium was constructed in 1921. It was named the Shields-Watkins Field and the Volunteers moved there. The first ever football game saw the Vols take on Emory and Henry on September 24, 1921. That was the beginning of the legacy of this iconic football field.
