The Kirby Center for the Performing Arts is a historic theatre and entertainment venue in Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania. The venue was opened during the early 20th century and has since become one of the most historic establishments of its community. It hosts a wide variety of entertainment events all year round and is attended by thousands of visitors each year. Needless to say, Kirby Center for the Performing Arts tickets are always in high demand.
The venue was opened in August 1938 and was originally a cinema house called Comerford Movie Theater. At the time, it was one of the grandest establishments of its kind and was equipped with state-of-the-art technology. And with a capacity of two thousand, the venue was also the largest cinema in Wilkes-Barre. The architecture of the building was in the Art Deco-Moderne style and was considered by many to be “an advanced art deco dream.” The extravagant interior had five lobbies as well as tall columns and oval rose-colored mirrors, along with copper-tinted walls and doors. The crowning design feature of the venue was an opulent chandelier, which still hangs in the Kirby Center. The actual premises of the theatre have an unconventional trapezoidal shape and look like a stylized ziggurat.
The theatre was a hit with the local community after its opening and was loved by many for the exciting collection of movies that were screened there. The Comerford continued to be successful for the next few decades, during which its name was changed to the Paramount Theater. In 1972, Hurricane Agnes hit the Wyoming Valley and exacted a heavy toll on Wilkes-Barre as well. The natural disaster resulted in flood waters that were fourteen feet deep and greatly damaged the Paramount Theater. While the theatre remained open, it was nevertheless forced to close due to competition as a new cinema complex at a nearby mall drew crowds away. The Paramount could not keep up with the changing market and was eventually closed and sold.
During the late 1970s and early 1980s, the venue began to be used for concerts and televised boxing matches. And while it was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1980, its former glory would lay dormant. This was until a local businessman by the name of Albert Boscov and Fred M. Kirby II repurchased and restored the theater in 1986. It was renamed the Kirby Center for the Performing Arts and has since continued to be a huge part of the community.
The Kirby Center for the Performing Arts aims to provide its patrons the highest quality of performing arts and theatrical experiences, all at affordable prices. It has a reputation for delivering said quality, with common saying among the locals to the effect of "If it is at the Kirby, it is guaranteed to be good!" Furthermore, a survey as part of a study by Luzerne County Commissioners found that respondents ranked the F.M. Kirby Center as the best destination in the country for a "cultural experience." Kirby Center for the Performing Arts tickets are now up for grabs and look good as always.
