This theatre, at Rupert Street, opened in 1906 as Hick theatre and was a twin counterpart of Queen's Theatre. In later years, it was renamed as Globe Theatre but is now changed to Gielgud Theatr. The theatre, during the time of its inception was named after Seymour Hicks. Hicks is a celebrated British playwright, actor and manager who was one of the first English actors to perform in France during both World Wars. This theatre was originally built to honor him for his theatric contributions. The very first play staged in this theatre was a Hicks Production named 'The Beauty of Bath.'

To add to the intrigue and excitement of this classical theatre, it has its very own resident cat named Beerbohm. He isn't living anymore but his portrait hangs proudly in the corridor. He was known for making surprise appearances during the staging, prompting actors to improvise their act accordingly. His favorite hideouts were the dressing rooms of Peter Bowles, Michael Gambon and Penelope Keith. When she left the world, she was dearly missed and her obituary was published on the cover page of Theatric Publication.

The Building of Gielgud is inspired by the Neoclassical Louis XVI style and designed by W.G.R. Sprague. Sprague was a famous architect of the grand age known for designing Italian Renaissance based theatres frontage. Its seating previously accommodated around 970 people but with several renovations over the year boxes and other seats are reduced to accommodate only 889 people.
