Exit In is an old and dark music venue situated in the middle of the city. Since its inception in 1971, many great bands have played there, building its reputation as one of the best music corners of the city. It was opened by Owsley Manier and his partner Brugh Reynolds at the time when there was nothing in Nashville to speak of. For quite some time the club ran under the management and supervision of five people who were more like a family including Brugh, his wife Alice, Owsley, Thiels and Bill Manier. During its first decade, Exit In underwent many expansions and renovations. In those days it consisted of a small bar and a listening room having a seating area of not more than 200 people.
Exit In once again underwent some major changes in early 80s when the seating capacity was increased to accommodate 300 more people. Now, the venue has a total seating area for 500 people. The roof and the lighting were improved when Wayne Oldham got involved in the club. He was one who got the pew seating installed in the listening room. This place has been used for the shooting of several documentaries as well as some music videos. The club has also been featured in films such as Nashville by Robert Altman and Born Standing Up by Steve Martin. The live album of The Howboy Catts was also recorded there in 2000.
Among the long list of artists that have performed at Exit In in the past include Johnny Cash, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Kings of Leon, Bon Iver and many more. This time around it’s the turn of Caspian, El Ten Eleven, Charles Bradley, Fu Manchu and The Dear Hunter.
