| Colonial Theatre Pittsfield is one of the historical theaters in the United States. Located in the Berkshire Mountains of Western Massachusetts, it is among those America theaters that have survived in their original shape. In 1998 the theater was announced as a National Historic Treasure. The theater is often listed among the worlds finest acoustical theaters. It is also a commercial hub of Berkshires with its share of theaters, museums and restaurants. Colonial Theater Pittsfield was built in 1903 under the patronage of Sullivan family of North Adams. It was designed by a firm of theater architects J.B. McElfatrick and Son who had designed a number of theaters throughout North America around 19th and the beginning of the 20th century but very few of those are survived the test of time, Colonial Theatre is being one of them. The outer structure of the theater was designed by Joseph AcArthur. Among its interesting historical aspects is the short span of five and a half months it was built in for a cost of $70,000. Colonial Theater Pittsfield opened to a sold-out production of Robin Hood on September 28, 1903. In 1953 the theater was converted into a storehouse for paint and art supply business by Sally Ruth Miller. In 2001 it was bought by the Millers and opened for public in 2006. Offering a wide variety of seating options, the first level is the orchestra, the balcony is the second level of the theater while gallery being the third. The twenty-two months restoration process not only preserved the old parts but also reinstalled the historical architectural features of the theater. The present structure caters to both performers and viewers. The theater has an awe-inspiring gilded entrance with elaborately decorated balcony and boxes with their intricate details and plasterwork. The central mural of the theater features the muses of art and music. The mural was also redone during the restoration process but is one of the few original artworks of the theater. Since its inception, Colonial Theater Pittsfield has been host to artists like George M Cohan. Zieffeld Follies, a popular and elaborate stage production have also performed a number of times at the Colonial Theater. Considered to be the most famous actress the world has known, Sarah Bernhardt also been a recurrent name on the list of performers at the Colonial.
