The Chicago Theatre opened its doors for the public for the first time in the year 1921. It was designed to be a motion picture arena which originally had a capacity of around thirty eight hundred. The venue had a grand opening with "The Sign on the Door" being the first film to be shown there. An orchestra of fifty pieces was also a part of it. The first week was completely sold-out with thousands of fans making their way through the gates to be a part of the festivities.

Jazz soon became one of the main attractions and it has remained that way ever since. Events stemming from the pop culture weren’t too far behind. The venue went under its most turbulent period during the 1970’s. Revenues pummeled due to a lot of factors ranging from economic to social. It all came to a head and the arena was closed temporarily in 1985.

The Chicago Preservation Group who owned the theater during that time began its renovations which were completed in the year 1986. The design was a throwback to the one it had in the 1930’s. The legendary Frank Sinatra for the first star to perform at the venue once the restoration was completed. The facelift put The Chicago Theatre on the map once again and it soon regained its lost glory.

The theater was sold to TheatreDreams Chicago in the year 2004. Three years later it was the Madison Square Garden Entertainment that became the new owners of the entire facility. The Chicago Theatre has seven floors and covers almost half a block. Its main lobby has five stories. The architecture is derived from the one that was a hallmark of the French during the 17th century.

The staircase in inspired by the one at the Paris Opera House and it goes all the way up to various balconies. The stage stands sixty feet wide, and is thirty feet deep. The place for orchestral performances is half a dozen feet under the main stage and is fifty four feet in width at the level of the main stage lip. It is also fifteen feet deep at the center.
