The arena was constructed with a budget of 80.5 million dollars and is operated by the Global Spectrum. The idea of building the arena was given by Richard A. Chaifetz, a 1975 SLU graduate, who donated 12 million Dollars to the university as donation which built this arena and named it after Chaifetz, to honor him. Chaifetz Arena hosts the home games of Saint Louis University Bilikens basketball for both men and women teams who previously played their home games at the Scottrade Center and Bauman-Eberhardt Center. Apart from that, the arena also holds the volleyball games of the teams of the university.
The first ever event to be held at the Chaifetz arena was a game between Washington Generals and Harlem Globetrotters which was played in 2008. The inaugural concert at the arena was performed by Barry Manilow which was enjoyed by all. In 2008, the first student concert was held at the Chaifetz Arena and it has spectacular performances of the artists like Jo Dee Messina, Augustana, Tyler Hilton, the Starting Line and Chingy. It was the beginning of what appeared to be the era of concerts and fun in Saint Louis. The arena also has a history of holding political events like in 2008, Sarah Palin, gave her Vice Presidential debate at the Chaifetz Arena.
