Blind Pig in Ann Arbor is the major music venue in Michigan which was opened in 1972. It was built as a European-influenced café by Tom Isaia and Jerry DelGiudice where the guests were served with home-made soups, a full wine and beer list, crostini, Italian biscotti along with top-notch entertainment. For the first ten years, the venue was dedicated to blues and it was the preferred style of music there. Local blues performers from Ann Arbor, Chicago and Detroit were showcased at the club. Among the regulars there included legends such as Koko Tayler, Boogie Woogie Red, Roosevelt Sikes, and Hound Dog Taylor, among many others. It was a favorite place of hardcore blues enthusiasts and sometimes even the music greats like Bonnie Raitt, Frank Zappa and Vladmir Horowitz have been spotted in the crowd at Pig. Blind Pig Records Label was also started by DelGiudice in 1975 to showcase the music of those singers and groups who used to show up regularly at the club. The label is still operating.
The venue was sold by Isaia and DelGiudice in 1979 to Dave Whitmore who also sold it to a native couple, Roy and Betty Goffett after three years. This couple along with their coordinating manager Todd Headrick, took the club to newer heights by making considerable changes. The most significant of which was the expansion of the club both artistically and physically. The interior space was almost doubled and an additional bar was added in the club. Today, the club stands as the hot spot of the city which hosts a variety of musical shows every single day. Blind Pig is home to bands like Funktelligence, Donkey Punch and Midwest Product. It is a living legend in Ann Arbor that shows mix talent of local as well as the established bands.
Cited by Nirvana as their number one venue of choice, Blind Pig is today a favorite spot for many local as well as touring bands. Standing as a testament to the rich cultural history of the area, Pig is to the Ann Arbor what The Whiskey A Go Go is to Los Angeles.
