The Air Canada Center is massive, covering space of over 665,000 square feet. Initially the arena was launched as a project by the Toronto Raptors basketball team with the team’s owner and businessman John Bitove making it his brainchild. Construction of the centre started in March 1997 and during this phase both the arena and the Raptors team was purchased by Maple Leaf Sports & Entertainment Ltd, who are the current owners of the centre. The arena was named the Air Canada Center when the airline purchased the naming rights. Acquisition by the MLSE however led to some major modifications in the design of the arena, since the company wanted an arena more suitable for ice hockey rather than the original notion of being more basketball specific. The centre also was constructed as a modern state of the art arena modeling others around the world with space for luxury suites, multiple restaurants etc. A complete underground pedestrian system was built for the arena and connected to the Union Station so as to allow ease of access and travel to the people. 13,000 parking spaces were also built within the immediate vicinity of the arena to handle the influx of traffic.

The Air Canada Center is considered the 11^th busiest arena in the world and this is not just because of the hockey or basketball games that are scheduled here. The centre has hosted concerts to capacity crowds by famous artist and bands such as Pearl Jam, Avril Lavigne and Nickelback. The arena has on numerous occasions been a battle ground for the popular wrestling stars of the World Wrestling Entertainment. The WWE has hosted mega events such as the Unforgiven 2006 and also plans to host the 2012 Royal Rumble at the arena. Even political conventions have been held at the centre with the Liberal Party of Canada holding their leadership convention in 2003.
