The 9:30 Club was founded in 1980 by Jon Bowers and Dody DiSanto. Ever since its opening, it has been home for alternative music in Washington and has been a popular spot for all bands on tour to perform along with local Washington bands like Root Boy Slim, Chuck Brown and the Sex Change Band. The popular band called The Police performed for the first time in America at the 9:30 Club. Other artists around the early period of the club consisted of bands such as Mod Fun, Blue Angel, X, The Bangles, Marshall Crenshaw, Marti Jones, The G0-GO's, Nash the Slash and Betty. In the 1970s, the club was located at 930 F Street, NW, Washington D.C and was called the Atlantis Club. The club gave permission to fans as young as sixteen years of age to enter. It hosted primarily punk, New Wave, and rock bands. In 1980, after the Atlantis was shut down, the club was opened again. This time it was named the 9:30 Club, the name giving away the address of the venue. Seth Hurwitz and Rich Heinecke were the owners of the club.
On the 5th of January, 1996 after a lot of changes, the previous WUST radio Music Hall got turned into Nightclub 9:30, popularly known as the 9:30 Club. This remains its current location. The opening performance that night was given by the Smashing Pumpkins. The internet music show called All Songs Considered also airs several performances at the Club. Its service is done by the African American Civil War Memorial/U Street/Cardozo station of the Metro. The club as been honored by the presence of Bob Dylan of two occasions, the 4th and 5th of December, 1997. The Beastie Boys have also given a performance at the club on the 17th of June, 2004. Their live album called Any Time Now was recorded by O.A.R at the club on the 23rd and 24th of November, 2001.
The 9:30 Club has won several awards such as Nightclub of the Year no less than 4 times by Pollstar, which is a trade journal in the concert industory. According to this journal, the club sells the maximum number of tickets most of the time. The Club sold 236112 tickets in 2004, which was a humungous amount for a nightclub.
