Wonderful Town: A result of great minds
Credit where it is due, the efforts of people who work tirelessly to bring these theatrical masterpieces alive should be appreciated. A prime example of that is Wonderful Town. Its music is provided by Leonard Bernstein and lyrics are penned down by Betty Comden and Adolph Green. Also, its book is written by, Joseph A. Fields and Jerome Chodorov. Together they have combined to bring the world this spellbinding musical.
Based on Joseph A. Fields and Jerome Chodorov’s play, ‘My Sister Eileen,’ Wonderful Town premiered on Broadway at the Winter Garden Theatre in 1953 and was produced by Robert Fryer. The original Broadway production was directed and choreographed by George Abbot and Donald Saddler and casted names like, Rosalind Russell, Edie Adams and George Gaynes. It ran for a total of five hundred and fifty nine performances and closed in 1954.
Wonderful Town received such great response from the people that after its original Broadway production wrapped up, it received a West End premiere and was staged at The Prince’s Theatre in 1955. It was produced and directed by, Jack Haylton and Cyril Ornadel and ran for two hundred and seven performances. In 1987, the musical was once again brought back to life at the West End and starred the Laurence Olivier Theatre Award winning comedian, Maureen Lipman. Almost half a century later, Wonderful Town got a Broadway revival in 2003 and opened at the Al Hirschfeld Theatre where it completed four hundred and ninety seven performances. The musical then went global and was also played in Canada and the United Kingdom.

What most people look for in a Broadway musical is a plot that makes them go on a journey with the protagonist and Wonderful Town offers just that. The audience imagines themselves in the shoes of sisters Eileen and Ruth on which the story revolves. The musical begins when both sisters come to New York from Ohio in search of better opportunities. Ruth decides to become a writer whereas Eileen tries to pursue a career as a dancer. Both driven by their passion, start to struggle but challenges await them as they begin their journey towards fulfilling their dreams.
The musical numbers are an integral part of any musical and Wonderful Town has its own collection of amazing songs. Tracks like A Quiet Girl, Pass the Football, Conga, What a Waste, Ohio, One Hundred Easy Ways and Conversation Piece among others will add something extra to the storyline and the performances.
